One was an introduction to linguistics class, which I'll probably mention when I review The Bird Way. Between 1989 and 1990, I took some additional college courses in hopes of getting a teaching certificate. That all went for naught when we moved to California. I did take three courses at The College of William and Mary that I loved, and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to experience. Criticisms can be made of the film. For one, "faithful" isn't exactly an adjective that can be used when describing it's relation to the source material: "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" by Robert O'Brien. However, the novel was a Newberry Award winner and it deserved an excellent film which is what it received.

The rats of NIMH were inspired by the research of John B. Calhoun on mouse and rat population dynamics at the National Institute of Mental Health from the 1940s to the 1960s. [6]

He quotes liberally from the Book of Revelation, italicizing certain words for emphasis (e.g. “to kill with the sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts”). He gave his claimed discoveries catchy names—the mice who forgot how to mate were “the beautiful ones”’ rats who crowded around water bottles were “social drinkers”; the overall societal breakdown was the “behavioral sink.” In other words, it was exactly the kind of diction you’d expect from someone who spent his entire life perfecting the art of the mouse dystopia. However, Mrs. Frisby is worried that Timothy will not survive the trip. She discovers that the farmer plans to start plowing in five days (earlier than she expected), and she doesn’t know what to do. Jeremy tells Mrs. Frisby that she should ask the wise old owl what to do, and he would fly her there to see him.

I understand that it is illogical and irrational that a creature so small should provoke such terror in me, but it's true. In 1982, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH became the basis for the animated film The Secret of NIMH, the directorial debut of Don Bluth. In 1998, a sequel to the film called The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue was released. The sequel has no connection to Racso and the Rats of NIMH and was met with poor reception. This is an interesting introduction to science-fiction for young readers. I mean rats and a few mice with special intellectual properties that want to build their own successful community... What's not to be interested in? The story has aged really well because there isn't anything to date it, like mentioning popular fashion choices of the time, so really anyone can read it.
