The book means a lot to me, so I'm working extra hard on the art. Maybe part of me is afraid that people will think that the writing is no good, and by increasing the level of art I'm hoping to convince them I'm a better writer than I really am. The characters are pretty interesting. Chris is certainly interesting for many reasons but the side characters grabbed my attention throughout too. Having acquired DNA from the Shroud of Turin (a burial cloth believed to belong to Jesus), a media entertainment company decides to create a clone with the DNA and raise him on a reality show. Of course, to make it truer to the Bible, they decide to implant the egg into an 18-year-old virgin, Gwen Fairling. As he grows up, every aspect of “Chris’ ” life is controlled and manipulated. In school, he’s taught creationism and faith healing. Accidents and events set up by the network are “miracles” to the believing masses. Sarah Palin scared the shit out of me in 2007 -- I was floored that someone that ignorant could come so close to being President. And a lot of her comments were about religion, politics, and the media. It made me want to take action, but I was just a comic book artist and I wasn't sure what I could do.Some people may be turned off by the monochromatic color palette, however Murphy wields this well. He provides variety in the white space and in the remarkable details. Content Warning How has your process in working on the book differed from how you work when drawing a script by another writer? As a collective group, those of us who don't believe in God need to stop acting like belligerent teens and start acting like the intelligent, thoughtful people we claim to be. The next time that Jehovah's Witness is standing on your doorstep, maybe you should offer them a bottle of water before sending them on their way? Although this story has some interesting ideas, and it roots in some real problems of religion and mass media, the main characters are not strong enough or well developed to support a story of the level of the criticism it attempts to make. Chris is accuesed of being preachy and this is how the story feels sometimes. (May it be noted that I am an active Atheist who shares almost all of the ideas Chris preaches about, but they are not quite fitted in the story). Also the general audience opinion of the whole show is never adressed, and we never see a moderate religious person, all of them are one dimensional characters. J2 causes both outrage and adulation. Religious zealots either love or hate the show, angry politicians worry about its influence on the nation, and members of the scientific community fear the implications of cloning a human being at all, let alone the Son of God.
