PFU (EMEA) Limited today announced the launch of the ScanSnap iX1300, a new personal document scanner with a small operational footprint to help individuals maximise their productivity wherever they work from. ScanSnap Home (for PC) combines all your favorite functions into one and is the ultimate platform to utilize scanned data in various ways. Easily manage, edit and utilize data from documents, business cards, receipts and photos with the software. You can scan large volumes of various types of documents from color photos to double-sided landscape documents with a host of intelligent automatic image processing functions. ScanSnap Home also helps you set up and maintain document management and archiving systems with features such as sequential naming, keywords, and search terms. It's joined by ScanSnap Manager, which is more of a conventional scanner driver that allows you to set up, execute, and route your scans to other applications, such as the included Abbyy FineReader for ScanSnap. The last is an optical character recognition (OCR) program that converts scanned text to searchable or editable text and exports it as a searchable PDF, a Microsoft Word document or Excel spreadsheet, and several other formats. Next, I timed the ScanSnap as it captured our two-sided text document and converted and saved it to the more versatile searchable PDF format, which is also editable and more suited to document archiving. The iX1300 scanned and converted the document and saved it to the local drive in 52 seconds. The other portable scanners mentioned here managed results under 60 seconds (well, 65 seconds for the S1300i); it hardly matters whether some were a second or two faster or slower. While this connectivity is more than adequate, what makes this and other ScanSnap devices extraordinarily complete and easy to use is Fujitsu's finely developed software bundle. The centerpiece, ScanSnap Home, is an all-in-one driver and document management program that lets you create workflow profiles containing instructions for configuring, executing, and sending your scans to their final destination(s).
