Although you can get duvets in almost any tog rating, the most common togs are 4.5 tog which makes a great summer duvet weight, 10.5 tog which tends to be the best bet for autumn and spring, and 13.5 tog which offers good winter warmth. Funnily enough, the duvet this most resembles is Simba’s warm/cool synthetic fibre hybrid. It’s not puffy - or ‘lofty’, as the experts say - but relatively slim and cool to the touch thanks to the 200 thread count cotton outer layer. It feels nicely cosseting at night without feeling at all heavy. Wool, as any sheep will tell you, is good for temperature regulation, keeping you warm at night but allowing moisture to escape easily.

Down is really very light,” says Emma Casson of The Bed Expert. “Feather-and-down is cheaper and a bit heavier – and some people like a bit more weight. Then you’ve got your synthetics, like microfibre. You can have really good quality synthetics nowadays. They’re really breathable.” Why you can trust Ideal Home Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test. Don't buy it if: your priority right now is affordability or ease of care. Although we think it's well worth investing in the great night's sleep it offers, there's no denying the price is prohibitive, and this duvet is dry clean only. Buy it if: you want an affordable winter duvet that still feels both warm and luxurious. This recycled polyester fill duvet has 10% silk mixed in, and whilst the proportion doesn't sound huge, it really makes a difference to the way this duvet feels, with a more luxurious touch and really nice drape on the bed, whilst still being lightweight. Even better it's a relatively budget buy, and made from certified recycled polyester from waste (like plastic bottles or manufacturing off-cuts) which helps the movement towards a more circular economy by reducing waste going to landfill. Compared with virgin polyester, recycled polyester helps conserve crude oil reserves during fibre production.

Don't Miss Out!

That comes down to your personal preference. Natural-fill duvets are generally more breathable and can be recycled when you’re done with them. But they may not be suitable for those with allergies, plus they’re more expensive than microfibre or hollowfibre duvets. Often viewed as the height of luxury, silk duvets are naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, and therefore ideal for people with eczema or asthma. Like wool, silk will help you stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Like all natural fillings though, they will need to be professionally laundered. Microfibre duvets: pros and cons Tog, size and type of filling were the three most important considerations reported by the duvet owners we asked. Other important factors included whether the duvet was machine washable, labelled hypoallergenic, and how much it cost.

Unlike the previous version of the duvet, where most of the filling is made up of goose feather, this version delivers a blend where the proportions are reversed. Here is a blend of 80 percent goose down and 20 percent small goose feather and that is why this by far the most expensive of all versions since down is a premium material. It has the same internal box construction, it is very warm and lightweight. Snuggledown Ultimate Luxury duvet If you are allergic to feathers, you may want to opt for a synthetic duvet. These are usually filled with microfibre (a fine polyester yarn) or hollowfibre (which is very similar, but slightly warmer), but you may see them called, ‘soft as down’ or ‘down alternative.’ Although the Classic Hollowfibre version is also hypoallergenic, the manufacturer has gone a step further with this duvet. Filling is treated in a special way to help reduce the build-up of dust mites and bacteria. It is tested and approved by leading Allergy UK experts. Snuggledown Goose Feather & Down duvetFirst up, it's synthetic fillings. These duvets are filled with manmade fibres, like polyester and polymide that are made from petroleum-based plastics. Microfibre– the 'luxury' version of hollowfibre, a microfibre fill is made of much finer strands of polyester resulting in a very lightweight duvet with a, yes, more luxurious feel. Some compare microfibre to the feel of down, but it has the upside of not running the risk of animal cruelty. However, again, being made of synthetics, the environmental impact of production and disposal is a concern. Like hollowfibre, microfibre can also cause overheating. In that case, it can even be suitable for autumn. If you have central heating and plan to use this duvet, we advise you to reduce the heating in the bedroom. Anyway, it is healthier to sleep in a colder room.

I was expecting something puffy and fluffy, but it’s both slimmer and heavier than expected, similar to the merino and wool duvets below. The magic is in the heat regulation. If you’re in one of those couples where the wife prefers oven-like warmth and the husband prefers access to oxygen (guess which side I’m on), it can be very hard to find a winter duvet you both like, but this one manages it. Tog is a measurement of how thermally insulating, and therefore warm, a duvet is. A high tog (10.5-15) is better for winter, while a low tog (1-4) will be light enough for summer. We also looked at tog sizes, fillings, and whether the duvets were machine washable. Here is what we found, starting with our favourite. It's one of the lightest and most supple fillings, meaning even a 14-tog microfibre duvet will feel light. Some people prefer this as the duvet won't feel heavy on you as you sleep, while others prefer a heavier, more closely hugging duvet. If you're not sure which you'd prefer, make sure you try them out in store before buying. Wool is a less common choice of duvet filling. It's similarly priced to feather and down, and excellent at retaining warm air, keeping you warm when cold and removing heat and moisture when you’re warm. Unlike feather and down, it’s naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites.Other options include silk and linen, but down and feather remain the most popular for their warmth and breathability. Casson herself sleeps with a down duvet from luxury German brand Mühldorfer, “as it’s the lightest and most luxurious.” (Mühldorfer duvets are used in luxury hotels in over 100 countries, which answers the common question, “What duvet do hotels use?”) What tog duvet should I buy? Don't buy it if: you truly want to splash out on the best duvet for your boudoir. This option is very good for its price, but the higher feather mix does mean it feels more 'clumpy' than the 90% down alternatives on our list. That said, this is still a great buy, and the addition of feathers does make the duvet a little more breathable than a duvet with a higher down percentage, albeit not quite as warm. Available in light (2-5 tog equivalent), medium (7-10 tog), warm (11-14 tog) and all-season (we tested light)
