Description

In the end, this novel will envelop you and break your heart, if only for the fact that I’m sure these experiences were the necessary evil for some women. There is one woman, Pearl, still grieving from the loss of her daughter in 1940, who befriends Sugar & resists judgment, to a degree. Although she resists judgment she is devastated to find out that the rumors circling the town are true---that Sugar is indeed a sex worker. Blood & Sugaris more than just a book, it plunges the reader into the vividly compelling world of 18th century London and the horrors of the slave trade. With a hugely likeable hero at its heart, this rich and beautifully written debut marks out Laura Shepherd-Robinson as a major new talent. Fiona Cummins, author of Rattle Another for you history buffs. Written in 1972 by a British scientist who was largely ignored it has been forwarded and updated by the esteemed Dr Lustig from above. If we had listen to John Yudkin, the author, over 40 years ago instead of the folks that said fat was the culprit we would be that much further ahead. A quite incredible debut. The writing is textured and assured, and the characters engaging, intriguing and complex. Moreover,I thought the book handled its horrific subject matter with greatsensitivity, without downplaying the historical realities of the times. Our Sugarbook review was conducted by our dating app experts, who rated the dating app in five different categories and discovered what the service does well and where it could improve. We underwent the entire end-to-end customer experience: registering an account, creating a profile, uploading photos, browsing matches, upgrading to a premium membership, and connecting with other singles.

Epic, harrowing, thrilling, brutal, addictive. I read it flat out in one day. CJ Tudor, author of The Chalk Man Paid members also receive read receipts whenever they send messages. These are helpful when you’re unsure whether you’re being ignored or the other party has yet to see your message. That way, you save time knowing when to move on. Hide Profile Activity I finished reading Bernice L. McFadden’s Sugar this morning at the gym. I have to confess that I did happen to see a review that mentioned something about the ending not being a very happy one, so I braced myself as I approached the last chapter. Happy ending or no happy ending, Sugar was as sweet a read as the title…bittersweet in places, but sweet just the same. I not only fell in love with Bernice’s writing style, but I also found a deep place in my heart for the two main women in the novel— Pearl, a middle-aged church-going woman who’s daughter’s brutal demise left her void of any zeal to live and Sugar, a prostitute who had never known true love and who had long given up trying to find it. I also fell in love with Joe, Pearl’s husband. As we all know, life never sits still, change and disruption often arrive uninvited and when they do Sugar must make a decision. There is so much I could say about this gripping and original book as I absolutely loved it and will be recommending it to everyone! I felt as though I could envisage every scene and was swept along with the vivid, strong characters. I kept thinking one more chapter… one more… and if I didn’t have three children to look after I would’ve read it through in one night! Karen Hamilton, author of The Perfect Girlfriend

The side characters are etched well despite having a limited presence. They do what they are supposed to do. Pearl has a major role in the book, making an almost equal share of the story. That worked for me. I think your liking for the book will depend firmly on how you view the content and what you want from the ending. Want a traditional HEA? Not gonna happen – what you get is an ending that is gritty and realistic. This works far better for me than a forced resolution of all ends. Want a lot of introspection by Sugar about her life as a prostitute? Not present. Though Sugar is the titular character, the story is as much Pearl’s as Sugar’s. One of the more luxurious privileges & possibilities our humanity allow us is the act of reinvention. We have the ability to create our own realities! To have curiosity meet possibility so that we can be shaped & reshaped time & time again. Dr’s. Avena and Lustig are not as far along as I’d like them to be into the study of sugar as an addiction but their approach as doctors needing to validate everything scientifically is so important as we move forward.

One of the things we believe here is that there are many ways to the mountaintop and these books are not only incredible in their comprehensiveness but they are great reads and great contributions. Highly recommended. He was a reporter at a party and he was putting a sugar cube in his coffee. From behind him he hears this incredible voice say: “I wouldn’t have that in my house let alone my body.” Ms. Swanson was way ahead of her time.
