About this deal

In a High Court of Justice case in the mid-1970s, which was abandoned by both sides due to escalating costs, writer Brian Clemens claimed that he had told Terry Nation the concept for the series in the late 1960s and had registered the idea with the Writers' Guild of Great Britain in 1965.[1] Nation strenuously denied this. Ahead of this month’s fifth series of the acclaimed audio revival of Terry Nation’s Survivors, we have some special offers for those eager to hear this series for themselves… In season one, stories were about life and death decisions. This is a cosy little domestic yarn. I have, like all good obsessives, scored every episode out of ten, so that I can decide how to rank the three seasons once we conclude our odyssey through the archives. The last two episodes for me are 5/10. Am I wrong?

With the digital world in its infancy, the hunt for Survivors locations was mainly an analogue activity. It involved trying to jog the memory of cast and crew members, poring over Ordnance Survey maps in the hope of finding matching terrain, and a great deal of trying around the B-roads of Herefordshire on the look-up for a likely spot.

John Eyers’ is the pen name of author Peter Hill, who also wrote the TV tie-in Special Branch: In At The Kill using the same pseudonym that was first published in 1976. A NEW AND original Survivors audiobook, voiced by Carolyn Seymour (Abby Grant), will be released by Big Finish in November 2021.

Greg: Thank goodness for A Friend in Need, which is the first of McCulloch’s scripts. Only the title is bad! Billions of people have died across the globe. Cities are rife with secondary diseases, and the survivors attempt to make their way out of London. This show poses and answers with great effect the age old mythical and sci-fi question, what would happen if we had to start society again, right from scratch? Two novels have been published: Survivors by Terry Nation is an adaptation of certain series one episodes, with a radically different ending. Genesis of a Hero by John Eyers is a direct sequel to the first book, which bears no relation to events in series two and three. Nation's first work on the science-fiction anthology series Out of the Unknown was scripting an adaptation of Ray Bradbury's short story The Fox and the Forest in 1965 for the show's debut series. It was about a 21st-century couple taking a forbidden trip to Mexico in 1938, only to be followed by enforcers from the future. It is one of only two episodes from the first series to be considered lost, with only two photographs and the end titles known to exist.

Meanwhile, screenwriter Brian Clemens claimed that he had related the concept for Survivors to Nation in the late 1960s while they were working together on the final season of The Avengers, with Clemens claiming to have registered the Survivors concept with the Writers' Guild of Great Britain in 1965; Nation denied the allegations. Although the case was ultimately brought before the High Court, both sides withdrew from the proceedings after their legal costs mounted. [14] The Stand (1994 miniseries), a post-plague television series set in the United States, based on Stephen King's 1978 novel of the same name

It begins with just a few people falling ill. Another flu virus that spreads around the globe. And then the reports begin that people are dying… For the beginning of series 2 the focus moved to a new location, at Callow Hill Farm, near Monmouth (but again just within Herefordshire), as "Whitecross". The Lights of London episodes featured Hanwell railway station, The Oval, and other locations in London, while the Waterloo & City line and the Camden Town deep-level shelter were used to represent parts of the London Underground. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and village of Skenfrith also made appearances. As you'd expect, the age of the show does leave some reservations and some of the stories would never make the cut now - undoubtedly it is dated, of course - but it also has to be said that the slow pace and different requirements of mid-70's TV actually enhance some aspects with regard to tension and plot building. When they tried to recreate and update the show later, the increased pace and need to make sure something was happening all the time detracted from the atmosphere and understanding of the characters. In the original, you care about the people and what happens to them. There is never any point you don't believe in this post-apocalyptic world and this is the show's strength. Meanwhile, as isolated communities find themselves exposed to a disease they know nothing about, Abby joins a desperate race to save lives. His work on Doctor Who was the subject of the documentary Terror Nation, a special feature on the BBC DVD release of Destiny of the Daleks. [13] Out of the Unknown [ edit ] By Rich Cross Last updated on 25 January 2021, 08:36:58 The pleasures and perils of location hunting

During the 1970s, Nation wrote a children's novel for his daughter Rebecca (after whom he named the character of Rebec in the 1973 Doctor Who serial Planet of the Daleks) titled Rebecca's World: Journey to the Forbidden Planet, as well as a novel based on Survivors. [17] [18] United States [ edit ] When Abby Grant and Evelyn Piper both arrive at Carol Baker’s Maythorne community, a chain of events is set in motion that could unleash a new wave of death across the country. After Vic attempts suicide, the others discuss how depressed he has become and set about finding useful tasks to give him a sense of purpose, such as teaching the children. Additionally, Greg and Paul go to a nearby town and find Vic a proper wheelchair. Two people turn up at the manor driving a tanker full of petrol. One is a young man, Donny, the other is Anne – the woman who had left Vic to die. Vic tells the others what she did, and Abby decides that Donny can stay but Anne must leave in the morning. That night, Anne attempts to kill Vic, who in turn also tries to kill her in anger. After both break down in tears, they talk. The following morning, a seemingly more positive Anne leaves the house, watched by Vic.

Survivors

After trying to get local communities to co-operate, and join Charles’ federation, it turns out that there’s a killer on the loose, specifically targeting women. Greg gets all James Bond about it, and there’s a manhunt, only they need a scapegoat to lure the killer in. His comparison to the color in Star Trek is probably unfair though. Star Trek was done at a time when color TVs were still relatively new and they went out of their way to use very bright colors on the sets and costumes, much the way they did the first color movies. In 1980, Nation moved to Los Angeles, where he developed programme ideas and worked for various production studios. Little of his work from this time was as successful as that of his earlier period in Britain. [8] He wrote scripts for the TV series MacGyver (1985) and A Fine Romance (1989). [19] Death [ edit ] Sam: There’s also another new character, Hubert, an odious farmhand played by John Abineri. He’s great, very funny, and somewhat fills the gap left by Tom Price? This series was created by Terry Nation, better known as the creator of Doctor Who's most deadly enemies the Daleks. I suspect Terry Nation got a lot of his inspiration from such books as Earth Abides and The Day of the Triffids. Particularly the parts about new societies. I've only seen the first series of this show. It was made the year before I was born. Apparently after the first series it started to go downhill, as writers were running out of ideas. Terry Nation was unhappy with the path the show was taking and disowned the later episodes. I think he wanted an ending more like Earth Abides, where post-plague society slips into primitive illiteracy.
