About this deal

While the built-in amplification will play a role in the amount of energy a sub can produce, as a general rule of thumb, the bigger the driver the better. For deep bass you should be looking for a sub with a driver that is at least 10in, but you could consider a 12in or even larger woofer. Interestingly, a big driver doesn’t necessarily mean the subwoofer has to be huge, and there are a number of sealed units that manage to cram 12in drivers into surprisingly compact cabinets. Does driver orientation matter for subwoofers? Electrical power is measured in watts (W) and the more wattage available, the louder the sub and the harder you can drive it without distorting, but the higher the price tag. A continuous output of 500W should be more than enough for most people, but if you have the budget you can go higher. The Sonos Sub also features revolutionary Trueplay technology. Trueplay scans your room, analyses the results and then fine-tunes the Sub for the ideal listening experience. Whether your room is large or small, densely furnished or minimalist, the Sub adapts to give the most natural and realistic sound possible (iOS device required).

This brings us to one of the most intimidating aspects of installing a subwoofer – the best place to position it. We touched on this when discussing the orientation of a subwoofer’s driver, but it’s also important to consider how the shape and dimensions of a particular space affect a sub’s overall bass response. This reference subwoofer is beautifully made, sports a curved metal mesh grille, and includes the SVS remote app for easy setup, simple control and effective optimisation. The SB-3000 also won’t break the bank, so whether you’re a hardcore audiophile or home cinema fanatic, this superb subwoofer is sure to please. We imagine this is Sonos' take on "budget" device. It fits neatly into existing Sonos systems, but we imagine it's also a rather niche product that won't be for everyone. For smaller spaces, however, it could well fit the bill. The Sub (Gen 3) is fairly large, and although Sonos doesn’t mention the size of the drivers, they use a force-cancelling configuration to produce deeper bass. There are also dual acoustic ports for increased low-end extension, and a pair of Class D amplifiers (although once again the actual power rating isn’t given). However, Sonos does claim the Sub (Gen 3) goes down to 25Hz.

There are subwoofers that employ two drivers firing to the left and right simultaneously, which use force-cancelling to generate increased output from smaller cabinets. This type of subwoofer also works well at the front of the room, and can be used in corners. We’ve already covered what the best TVs are, but if you’d like some bigger-picture TV intel that you can carry around with you, we thought it best to put together this guide to the best TV brands. While this isn’t an end-all-be-all resource, we’ve definitely vetted and tested enough TVs to know what brands are worth considering, as well as which are best to avoid. We’ve also made sure to highlight the calling card features and specifications of these noteworthy names. Adjustable level and crossover switches let you get the perfect sound match for your speakers and room. Phase is fully adjustable, meaning that wherever the subwoofer is placed in your room – in front, to the side or behind you – the bass is fully in sync with the rest of the music. It is important to remember that a poorly engineered sub, or one that has been set up incorrectly, can hamper the audio output of a speaker system. Some subs are designed for the rumble and growl of home cinema systems, but not necessarily for music. Areas of Use It may be the smallest in the family of Minx subs but don't underestimate the power of the X200! Like the other Minx subs, the X201 uses unique Cambridge technology to produce a bass response that is both powerful and tuneful. At the heart of the X201 beats Cambridge Audio's sophisticated DSP (Digital Signal Processor). When combined with the digital amplifier, this provides exceptional bass from what is one of the world's smallest subwoofers. To maximise this advantage the bass cones are constructed of one-piece, aerospace grade aluminium. Overall I am very impressed with the quality of the subwoofer. Value for money is always subjective and it is not the cheapest out there, but the quality of the sound is superb and this has added so much more to the sound quality of my set up than I imagined it would. Regarding wireless sound systems, Sonos has secured its place in the market. You can hardly even talk about Bluetooth speakers without using the company’s multi-room speaker handoff systems. But when looking at the Play:1s or Play:3s, you can easily forget that these smaller speakers, even if paired in stereo doubles, don’t offer much in the way of low end. That’s where the latest generation of Sonos’s SUB system comes into play.

Unlike many subwoofers, where the controls are awkward to access, the ProfileSub mounts them on the front panel for easy access. Once set, simply replace the grille to cover the switches. If you don’t like the idea of running subwoofer cables all over your living room, some brands offer optional wireless modules that pass the full-range audio signal with no latency, thus eliminating clutter. Other subs are designed to be used only as part of a wireless system. The slim, stylish subwoofer can be displayed on the floor outside the system or insidea cabinet. Force-canceling drivers inside the cabinet face-to-faceallow for a complete, unfettered bass response, so you don't have to worry about cabinet-buzzing, rattling, or any other artifacts to the sound. And just like the rest of the Sonos family, it can be wirelessly connected to the entire system and controlled with the Sonos app. If you're in any doubt about the quality of this system then take a look at what the reviewers have been saying. "Well, Bose is about to get a sound thrashing from the British boys at Cambridge Audio, whose brand-new Minx is even smaller than Acoustimass - especially the subwoofer - and simply better. Much, much better." Jonathan Margolis, Financial Times. And, "To say we were impressed is a gross understatement." T3This classy model combines a 13in high-excursion driver with powerful Class D amplification to create an uncompromising subwoofer that can generate exceptional amounts of bass with pinpoint control and flawless tonal accuracy. The result is an exciting and muscular performer that often feels like an iron fist inside a velvet glove. As you'd expect from Sonos, the Sonos Sub Gen 3 is a breeze to set up. With no wiring or programming required, simply press one button and follow the prompts from the Sonos app. It automatically adjusts the audio settings to ensure that the Sub is fully optimised to work with your paired Sonos components.
