Description

As Landowner Blue is manufactured to ISO22241 specifications under license of the VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie e.V.) you can rest assured that our product is of the highest standard for your car. No, there are several different types of AdBlue. These are differentiated by International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 22241 numbers. ISOs ensure that the AdBlue you use is effective and has been created to the proper specifications.

By mixing the AdBlue with the gases produced by your engine’s exhaust, the SCR can create a chemical reaction which makes these exhaust emissions less harmful. Make sure your onboard computer has validated the refill before restarting the engine. This comes in the form of a dashboard message and may take a couple of minutes to come through. The term AdBlue® is a worldwide trademark of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) relating to DEF produced in accordance with the ISO 22241 specifications. AdBlue®, a water/urea based operating fluid, is stored in a tank (like diesel fuel), however, unlike fuel it is not injected into the engine, but directly into a specially modified part of the vehicle’s exhaust. This begins a chemical reaction which removes the polluting oxides of nitrogen (NOx), converting them into harmless water and nitrogen in a process known as Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR for short. SCR is only applicable to diesel engines and the more economically you drive, typically, the less AdBlue® you will use. The size of the AdBlue® tank fitted to your car will vary depending on which Volkswagen model you have, therefore the interval between top-ups will vary. In addition, many factors such as mileage, journey type, driving style and environmental conditions can influence how much AdBlue® is consumed. A passenger car can consume approximately 1.5 litres of AdBlue® every 620 miles (1.0–1.5 litres for the Passat and Passat Estate). The chart below details the AdBlue® tank size and location for all Volkswagen models that use SCR. How will I know if the system needs topping-up?For example, the Volkswagen Touran features an 11-litre tank, while the larger Touareg boasts a 19.5-litre tank. It’s impossible to drive without AdBlue® – your engine will not start, and you’ll see a notification noting ‘AdBlue® is empty’. A notification will also appear when your AdBlue® tank is running low. A full tank of AdBlue should last between 6,000 and 7,000 miles, on average. 1 litre of AdBlue lasts around 600 miles, but this can be affected by your driving style. The more fuel your vehicle uses, the more AdBlue it will consume as well.

Modern diesel cars run on ISO-22241-1, ISO-22241-2, or ISO-22241-3. If you are unsure which type your car uses, consult your vehicle handbook. If you ignore the warning light and let your tank run dry, your car will enter 'limp home' mode and you won't be able to restart the engine once you switch it off. However, it is still a special mixture created for chemical reactions within your exhaust system, so it should not be used for anything else. In addition, water is the primary ingredient, so it may be corrosive to certain metals.
