About this deal

Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates.

If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Bowmore 15 Years Old (43%) has been paired with the Aston Martin DB4 in what the teams call “a united desire for elegance”. The 1958 DB4 was the first Aston Martin to use an Italian-inspired ‘superleggera’ chassis, considered a design milestone for the company. The whisky, aged in first-fill bourbon casks and hogsheads, is similarly said to show Italian nuances and refinement in its flavour profile. Bowmore 21 yo 2001/2022 (51.6%, Douglas Laing 'XOP' for The Whisky Exchange, #DL16464, refill sherry butt, 514 bottles)

Bowmore 18 yo (43%, OB +/- 2022)

Bowmore 16 yo 2001/2017 (54.8%, Cadenhead '175th Anniversary' for Whisky Shop Baden, hogshead, 294 bottles)

Colour: pale straw. Nose: a little gentler than its sibling, softer, more coastal, gently peaty with this familiar wispy and ethereal peat smoke note. Beach pebbles, dried seaweed, Maggi and in time more of these tea tree oil and exotic fruit tea combinations that are really charming. With water: same hypnotic and brilliant development, only this time it goes more towards fruits to arrive at roughly the same profile as its sibling. Mouth: more power, more saltiness and more brittle, drying smokiness, but there's still this tropical fruit abundance as in the sibling cask. Smoked cereals, dried pineapple, papaya and mango once again. More smoked teas, more dried herbs and more of these salt-baked fish notes. With water: brilliant! Mentholic, mineral, fruity and even waxy and oily in texture now. Perfectly mature and gushing with distillery character and purity. Finish: long and brilliantly fruity, salty and bright! Comments: a notch drier overall perhaps, but this is still the same ballpark in terms of overall quality. Bowmore 16 yo 1998 (59.9%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society 3.236 'Heathery smoke drifting by the shore', refill barrel, 141 bottles) If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.Bowmore 18 yo 2001/2020 (55.4%, The Character of Islay Whisky Company 'The Stories of Wind & Wave', refill bourbon barrel, cask #11714)

In all fairness, though, they really should be. Bowmore is indeed the oldest distillery on Islay, and indeed one of the oldest in the whole of Scotland, having been established in 1779. Their ownership under Beam Suntory affords them good access to markets around the world, while their single malt style reflects a rounder and less aggressively peaty/smoky take on Islay scotch whisky. This can actually make Bowmore an ideal introduction to peated single malts for those who want to dip a toe into Islay, as their core lineup balances sweetness, fruit and smoke nicely. If all you’ve ever tasted of Islay is something like Laphroaig 10, this is a much different experience, and not nearly so bombastically smoky. In fact, some of the sherried Bowmore malts are instead on the desserty and decadent side.

BEAUTIFULLY COMPLEX

Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Whilst whisky’s steeped history and long, slumbering maturation periods may give the impression of monolithic regularity – times do in fact change – and we’re not just talking about prices, but about the character of the make itself. Sometimes change is in slow incremental steps, sometimes it’s sweeping and dramatic – such as following a change in ownership or production methods. Distillate produced 10…20…or even 30 years ago almost always has a different profile to that which is produced today. Some for the better (consistency is arguably more consistent nowadays), and some for the worse. Distillery’s go through periods where they can seemingly do no wrong (read current Springbank), but equally years where things appear to have gone rather awry. Case in point - Bowmore. Bowmore 10 Years Old (40%) has been partnered with the Aston Martin 1923 Razor Blade, so called for its specific goal to break the 100mph speed barrier. The boldness in the racing car’s conception and design is said to be matched by the bold flavour of the Bowmore 10 Years Old, which is aged in sherry casks. Bowmore 18 yo 2001/2020 (50.8%, The Character of Islay Whisky Company 'The Stories of Wind & Wave', refill bourbon barrel, cask #11715)

Bowmore’s 15 year old expression is bottled at a slightly higher strength of 43% ABV (86 proof), which remains the same for the rest of the lineup. Looking at the glass, you can immediately see that something is different about this one, as the mahogany coloration is far darker than the golden shine of the Bowmore 12. That extra color is the result of a secondary maturation period in oloroso sherry casks—after spending its first 12 years in bourbon, this one gets three more years in sherry casks, which ultimately makes for a totally different profile in comparison with the 12 year old malt in particular. Where the 12 year is fairly balanced, this one is definitely leaning into the sweeter, more decadent and desserty side of the spectrum. Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. Bowmore’s flagship 12-year-old single malt is presented at the baseline of 40% ABV (80 proof), but is plenty flavorful despite that handicap. This is a pretty standard Islay malt as far as the specs are concerned, matured presumably in used American oak, and with a definite portion of peat-smoked malt that is apparent on both the nose and the palate. With Islay single malts, it is often the case that the younger flagship expressions are more aggressively peaty and smoky, and this is the case for Bowmore, although it’s still considerably more mild in this one dimension than much of its competition. You won’t be getting Bowmore 25 cheaply, but then again, you probably shouldn’t expect to. This quarter of a century old expression is the apex of the distillery’s “core” lineup, and it’s honestly surprising they would even produce enough of this stuff for it to be regularly available with that kind of age statement. Like the 15 year old, this one experiences both bourbon and Spanish sherry cask maturation, although the distillery provides less detail about what kind of sherry casks, and how long that maturation might be. In general, though, it can be assumed that the folks at Bowmore pull out this bottle when they have someone to impress. Like the other expressions after the flagship 12 year, this one is bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof). We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Any new functionalities, tools and features shall be part of and governed by the Terms from the moment they are launched and/or available. Further, we reserve the right to modify, change, discontinue the Service, add or remove features, update the Service, change its appearance, temporarily and permanently, at any time, in whole or any part thereof. On the nose, Bowmore 12 is somewhat meaty, with BBQ smokiness that pairs nicely with a subtle nuttiness/nut butter quality that makes me think of almond butter. There’s also a bright citrus layer, which combines with the malt to evoke bergamot/Earl gray tea. The smoke level is moderate, but will seem mild to those who are well-versed in other Islay single malts. Finish: Medium to long. Again on orange, with ashy, puffy smoke plumes sitting alongside fading berries and salt water. We deliver to a number of international destinations including the USA.
