Comic Natalie (in Japanese). Natasha, Inc. Archived from the original on December 14, 2020 . Retrieved January 9, 2021. Then, Fujimoto breaks the lone artist image of Fujino. Almost exactly halfway through the book, after we’ve witnessed Fujino and Kyomoto’s friendship blossom and wilt, we see what it takes to pull Fujino’s focus away from drawing. in classic fujimoto fashion, of course there has to be some kind of break. and through this break, fujino gets to know regret. and hast to find a, also classically fujimoto-esque, funny but also deeply touching way to deal with these newfound feelings, this regret to ever let kyoumoto become dependent and then again gain independence from her. it is about regret and it is about dealing with these feelings of regret and coming to accept that the past can not be changed, no matter how hard one tries.Shimada, Kazuki (December 6, 2021). 漫画ライターが選ぶ「2021年コミックBEST10」島田一志 編 『ルックバック 』という収穫. Friendly Rivalry: Fujino and Kyomoto have elements of it, with both being deeply inspired by the other to improve their art. It's tragically used as the reason Fujino blames herself for Kyomoto's death, feeling like her friendship pushed her to go to art school. While people may understand the words -- after all, anger never gets anyone real resolution or peace -- the KyoAni incident itself was fueled by one angry person. Not feeling angry in the face of so much grief and pain isn't easy. So, Fujimoto offers a way for people to express their anger: by imagining what could have been and persistently creating, the legacy of the people that passed away can still be carried on. a b c 【第66回】担当作家 藤本タツキ先生Q&A![[66] Writer Tatsuki Fujimoto Q&A]. Jump Rookie! (in Japanese). Shueisha. July 2, 2020. Archived from the original on July 2, 2020 . Retrieved January 9, 2021. Reclusive Artist: invoked A major theme of the story. Kyomoto stopped attending school from a very young age, apparently due to anxiety and agoraphobia, and took up drawing to pass the time. It's also shown how Fujino's dedication to making manga isolates her from her friends and family. After Kyomoto's death, Fujino questions if art ruined their lives, and if her friendship led to Kyomoto's attending art school and being killed.

Interest Stacks

After realising this was about precocious high schoolers discovering the joy of creating manga together, I was expecting a Bakuman-style comic - and if that was all we got, I wouldn’t have minded because that first volume of Bakuman at least is amazing. But I appreciated that Fujimoto took his story in a wildly different direction in the second half, even if he did so in a very clunky way. Creator Thumbprint: Fujimoto's love of movies and especially the movie theater experience makes its obligatory appearance when Fujino and Kyomoto's day out in the city includes going to the movies. Jump SQ. (in Japanese). Shueisha. Archived from the original on January 9, 2021 . Retrieved January 9, 2021. Fujino and Kyomoto have another one where they are shown having fun creating their manga one-shots and going on trips with their newly earned money, eventually culminating in the fateful news of Fujino being serialized that would soon tear them apart due to differing life goals. Establishing Character Moment: Fujino is first seen humble-bragging about her skills as an artist, but also mentioning that she has no desire for an entire career in manga and prefers athletics. This sets up how Fujino ultimately has no passion for drawing beyond her pride and making Kyomoto happy.
