About this deal

Marmalade is the ninth picture book by David Walliams and the second collaboration with Adam Stower. But when the other pandas see him they are not impressed – rather this embarrassment of pandas is embarrassed. And so, Marmalade sets out on a perilous adventure through the jungle to find out just where he belongs…. Find out about camouflage? Why do animals have fur / skin with different colours and patterns? Why can some animals change their own colour?

Retell part of the story from the point of view of Marmalade’s mother (or the Elder Panda). Can you explain how they feel about the arrival of the little panda? There are lots of examples of onomatopoeia in the story (e.g. doink, splash, bump). Can you find / think of any more? Research some information about pandas and write a report about them. Can you present this as a leaflet, a written report or an audio / visual / multimedia report? I have another 2yr and a bit grandson and he loved it and now the slightly younger one loves it too. They ask for Marmalade and they sit and listen as I read.

Reviews

Can you find all of the adjectives in the book. What do they describe? Can you think of synonyms for some of them? I stand by my previous note about the language for a younger child but don't let that put you off. Children need to learn all levels of language and they may not understand now but just hearing the words and seeing the pictures is enough for this very young age.

This book is like an early spring, colourful, light and joyous. Adam Stower has done a marvellous job on the illustrations which bring my story to life. It tells the tale of a baby panda named Marmalade who thinks like he doesn’t fit because his fur is orange. Marmalade goes on an epic journey through the forest meeting all the weird and wonderful creatures along the way to find out where he belongs.”
