When paying by SEPA direct debit, you authorize us by issuing a corresponding SEPA mandate to collect the invoice amount from the specified account. You can stabilise the unbalancing effect of a rear seat to some degree by using low-rider panniers on the front of the bike and filling them with the picnic, toddler paraphernalia or shopping. The extra weight around the front wheel will steady the steering and keep the tyre on the tarmac – especially uphill, where the lightly loaded front end can otherwise become skittish.

Being at a place at the beginning or the end of the day, in rain or sunshine, summer or winter, a good or a bad mood, influences how you perceive a place or a moment. That is why every trip is different (p. 98) The one thing to be aware of in this setup is that there can be a fair amount of jostling in a bakfiets style bike. You will need to ride extra carefully and slow way down for speedbumps and other hazards. Get a helmet, slow tip overs like a kid would experience learning to ride a bicycle can definitely leads to head trauma without a helmet which still has its impact resistance. (After a crash or bang some helmets lose their ability to keep you safe. Keep a helmet on their head when around bikes if you don’t want the to have long term brain damage. Some seats recline and children as young as six months – those who can sit up when propped up – can go in those. A reclining seat is better anyway because it allows your little one to drift off to sleep without slumping sideways or forwards. freehubs: In 2012, Shimano released its 11s Dura Ace group. This reverted to the old spline pattern, but had a slightly wider freehub. 11s freehubs can take 10s cassettes with a spacer. 10s freehubs cannot fit most 11s cassettes (note: they can fit MTB cassettes and HG700 or HG800 cassettes), and will be advertised as being specific to 10s. 11s compatibility means your freehub is made after about 2012.

We used both a trailer and a front-mounted child seat immediately after his first birthday. Both his and our favorite at this age ended up being the front-mounted seat. It allowed him to be up close to dad where he felt safe, provided him a great view of whatever was going on, and let us keep an eye on him without having to turn around.

A shop that’s friendly to beginner riders will have staff who run you through a range of options without bamboozling you with jargon. They will ask you what you’re planning to do with the bike – and listen to your answers – rather than rattle off a stream of buzzwords. Older Mongoose bikes made through the 1980’s had pretty easy serial numbers. Generally the year and month of build was stamped as the first part of the serial number. For example my 1986 Mongoose Expert has a serial number M6EG0652. The first number (6) relates to the year – 1986. The next letter relates to the month (E) is May based on the convention January (A), February (B), March (C), April (D), May (E), June (F), July (G), August (H), September (I), October (J), November (K), December (L). It is assumed that the G0652 is the production number. There were a few variations on this type of serial number, but usually they were pretty easy to work out.

Best baby and toddler helmets

Feet in spokes account for half of all child hospital admissions that involve child seats. Footrests are not enough; feet may slip off or your child may simply forget and let legs dangle. It’s essential that any seat has secure foot straps, ideally in wraparound foot wells. The helmet will do more harm than good by adding weight to the head and pushing the head forward. Secondly, if they are in one of my suggested car seat set-ups, there will never be a linear fall—which is all a helmet is designed to protect against. For children aged up to four or so, the WeeRide Safe Front Seat is a better choice because it’s centre mounted on a bar above your top tube so designed for a heavier passenger. And the land of bagpipes, tartan and the thistle certainly didn’t disappoint – surely Scotland is the only country in the world that has a weed as its national flower! You may end up pedalling awkwardly with your knees out, but balance is actually better, particularly over bumps

When budget or storage space is an issue, some families may prefer to skip the balance bike altogether in favor of other learn-to-ride options like training wheels, or even simply removing pedals from a regular bike. Little fingers can also get caught, usually in an adult’s sprung saddle rather than the spokes. If your saddle has springs, either swap it for one that doesn’t or make or buy a finger guard. Bobike’s Saddle Spring Protector is what you need if you don’t fancy doing some DIY using a strip of stiff plastic and some zip ties. If you want to avoid the upfront cost and still get a really decent balance bike for your child then the best option is to lease from The Bike Clubfor a small monthly fee – plus you get to upgrade to a pedal bike when your child is ready.Getting the size right is important, for both comfort and safety. A bike that’s too large will be ungainly and possibly dangerous, while you won’t be able to get the saddle height high enough for comfortable pedalling if the bike is too small and you’ll feel cramped. Although it’s the highest-priced bike on our list, cycling guidebook author Cassandra Brooklyn recommends it to us for several reasons. “It's extremely easy to assemble, taking about only 10 minutes and requiring no existing knowledge of bicycle assembly,” she says. “It comes in fun and interesting colors and patterns, which can help get a reluctant rider excited about riding.” Frame/Fork Braze-ons. Race bikes tended have less braze-ons the earlier the year of manufacture. Most 60's racers and earlier had few or none with cable guides/stops, shifters, bidons, etc. being clamp-on. By the 80's if it was clamp-on, it was a sign of very cheap models and most frames had braze-ons for all cables, with multiple bottle and accessory bosses depending on style and use.
