About this deal

Santa Grint (Short Story, 2022) More about the Chronicles of St. Mary’s series The Story of the Chronicles of St. Mary’s Zara Ramm is a generally good reader. But even in an error ridden field like audio narration, Ramm makes an unusually large number of mistakes. Max ping pongs around the timeline putting out fires, (and sometimes engulfed in them), trying to be one step ahead of them while appearing to be a respectful, (yes we are talking about Max), new trainee on her first timeline missions. She pulls these off with aplomb, or not! As usual I found this utterly delightful. Max and Co, as I've mentioned previously, have a special place in my heart and I will devour any and all stories that Jodi has to tell about his wonderful found family. Max at this point in the series is starting to think about settling down, much to Leon's delight, and it was interesting to see her come to the realisation that she can't carry on jumping up and down the timeline forever. Even if she wants to. So what do you do when your whole life has revolved around your job? You get a new one working for a highly criminal organisation that may have links to your own chequered past, obviously. I was also nice to see more of Markham and Max's relationship. After recent Markham revelations he's much less the mystery man, and it's allowed Jodi to expand on his already overwhelming personality even more. I'm not alone in saying Markham is my favourite character.

I think part of the reason this series is still working so well is because the characters age. They go through different life stages, have children who also age and take on trainees who grow into their roles. No Equal-Opportunity Time Travel: Frequently raised as an issue for the female members of the St. Mary's team, who in some eras need a male figure to be able to interact with the locals. The story takes place sometime in the future. The secret of time travel became available to all. Chaos ensued as people sought to take advantage. Most of the short stories in the Chronicles of St. Mary’s series have been collected in two volumes: Jodi Taylor reads the long-awaited prequel in her Chronicles of St Mary’s series, as Dr Bairstow struggles to set up St Mary’s as we know it in a world still scarred by the ravages of civil war. Nevertheless, the scrambling to save people and stop a bunch of lunatics was still highly entertaining even if there was too little Markham and DEFINITELY too little St. Mary's in general. At least we got Pennyroyal - man, that was a FIGHT - and he was quite funny despite everything (though we had too little time with him, too). I did quite hate the fact that this was the end for "the pros and cons" and that Lady Emilia and Pennyroyal are moving on now. Especially after the biggest "d'aw" moment came courtesy of Pennyroyal offering to off Gaunt for free because he was the one to chop off Max's hair.

Long Story Short was published in 2019 and collects “Christmas Past; The Battersea Barricades,”“The Steam-Pump Jump,”“And Now For Something Completely Different,”“When Did You Last See Your Father?,”“Desiccated Water,”“Markham and the Anal Probing,” and “Little Donkey.” The Cretaceous Is Always Doomed: Justified, as the reason St. Mary's exists is to investigate notable historical events and those events are often lively. indicates a digital only Short story - these are also available in print in the anthologies The Long and Short of It and Long Story Short.

Tropes in individual works (Beware Spoilers)

On her first jump in a while, she experiences some side effects due to having jumped around the time line too much, however, all’s well that ends well and no damage seems to have been done. Ever wondered how it all began? It’s two years since the final victory at the Battersea Barricades. The fighting might be finished, but for Dr Bairstow, just now setting up St Mary's, the struggle is only beginning.
