The UDM and UXG run a different operating system than the USG. The CPU is an easy way to tell. MIPS based devices like EdgeRouters and USG run EdgeOS. ARM based devices like the UDM and UXG run UniFi OS. An ARM port of EdgeOS is unlikely. UniFi OS is a custom Linux distribution made with Buildroot Linux that mostly follows Debian standards. In their announcement, Ubiquiti said this about UniFi OS: UniFi Cloud Gateway supporting all UniFi applications: Network, Protect, Talk, Access, Connect, and Identity. We are very excited to announceUniFi OS- a shared platform for all UniFi Controllers. Key features:The 3rd chart is for the standalone, independent UniFi gateways that require a Cloud Key or some other controller. One potential problem with the UXG-Pro is the current state of the development of the UDM-Pro and UniFi OS. Some features on the UDM-Pro are not working, incomplete, buggy, or just missing. Since they promise the UXG line will be able to do everything the USG can do, they have a lot of work to do.

Like the USG, the USG-Pro is old, and most of the limitations apply. The USG-Pro has slightly more powerful hardware than the USG, but not by much. If you’re comparing to the EdgeRouter line, the EdgeRouter Pro (discontinued) and the USG-Pro share a CPU, and have similar performance.Since the UXG-Pro has the same processor and 10 Gbps ports as the UDM-Pro, we should expect similar performance. This graph shows it all. Ubiquiti never officially supported editing the JSON configuration file, but it allowed for flexibility. It was never a good system, and those modifications were never guaranteed to work, or survive firmware updates. It is an old, unsupported way of managing a UniFi network. Unfortunately, there are situations and features where this is the only option. The UXG-Pro was finally added to general access in March 2022, after spending nearly 2 years in the Early Access store. The UXG-Pro is not a UniFi OS Console, meaning it can be used with self or cloud-hosted UniFi Network controllers, like the USG line could. The UXG-Pro doesn’t run any UniFi applications, making it a standalone router just like a USG or USG-Pro. Downgrades to dual-core ARM CPU, vs the quad-core on the UDM. Lower IDS/IPS throughput as a result.

These 2nd generation models have quieter cooling fans, a small touchscreen on the left side, and support for UniFi AR, which lets you see virtually see what devices are connected EdgeRouters have been around a long time, and are still technically supported with hotfixes and occasional software updates. The newer UISP hardware line is the safer bet for long term support, although EdgeRouters still have a lot of feature advantages. All of the Dream Machines and UniFi OS Consoles are based on modern ARM processors and Ubiquiti's new UniFi OS software platform. You can’t create custom JSON config files for them, but a limited set of manual configuration changes and Linux commands can be run via SSH, if you know what you’re doing. None of these can be adopted to an external UniFi Network controller besides the UXG-Pro. Built-in 128 GB SSD and SD card slot for UniFi Protect motion recording, with a 512 GB SD card pre-installed. Basically a UDM-Pro without the built-in UniFi OS Console, 8-port Ethernet switch, or 3.5” HD bay for UniFi Protect. Both of these products have MIPS processors, with the Vyatta-based EdgeOS underneath. You can create custom json config files for them, which give them some flexibility that the UDM and UXG lines don't have. These can be adopted to an external UniFi Network controller, but offer limited performance and old hardware. The UDM and UniFi OS Consoles in general were a big change in the UniFi line. Before, it was easy to run the UniFi Network application anywhere, and add any devices you wanted. With the UDM, you’re forced to use the built-in Network application, meaning you can’t add a UDM to a Cloud Key or self-hosted UniFi Network controller.
