Protective waxing or a sealer coat of polyurethane can extend the life of chalk paint. Experts recommend sealing chalk paint finishes with a protective wax to prevent wear and tear, especially in high-traffic areas or high-touch surfaces. For peace of mind, brands like Rust-Oleum and others provide their own protective top coats designed for use with their chalk paint. Since VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are released into the air as paint cures and have been linked to a wide range of health problems, it is reassuring to know that Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint is free of them. The paint is a water-based with impressive adhesive qualities that will save you time when painting. When using chalk paint, there is no need to sand or prime the surface first.

Hello, I’m Annie Sloan. I’m going to show you my signature technique, which is two tone distress. The idea is that you have one colour underneath, you put another colour on top, you wax it, you distress it using sandpaper, and you can see the colour underneath. Sand the raised details with a sanding sponge to expose some of the gold paint. This will really make the details stand out.I’m planning my daughters vintage chic bedroom makeover, and a part of the makeover will include aged gold accents or vintage gold tones. Our Antique Gold Shabby Chic Furniture Paint leaves a metallic finish which you can apply without the need of an undercoat or primer. Why? Because it’s so richly pigmented! The best chalk paint is Rust-Oleum Ultra Matte Interior Chalked Paint. With outstanding adherence and durability, this paint is great for a wide variety of surfaces. For small craft projects where you don't want a lot of leftover paint, we recommend FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint, which comes in bottles as small as 2 ounces and costs just about a dollar an ounce. What to Look for in a Chalk Paint Surface Compatibility So now I’m ready to wax. This is my Clear Wax and this is my Wax Brush, this is a bristle brush it’s nice and pointy and it goes in all the little bits that I need, to all the nooks and crannies. So you get quite a lot of wax on it, not too much – you don’t want to overload it – and then you get going.

This paint dries to the touch in 30 minutes. However, if you’re looking for a more opaque finish, you’ll have to wait at least two hours between coats. While primer isn't necessary with this chalk paint, it is highly suggested for unfinished wood. You also don't need to sand your surface for the paint to adhere. If paint gets on the floor by accident, the latex formula makes it easy to clean up with just soap and water. Paint the gold mirror frame with chalk paint. Be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies on the raised details. Let dry at least 30 minutes and apply a second coat. You can’t do it like you’re just cleaning something: you just polish it all off. You’ve really got to use the – these are great because they’re flexible, you can do them how you want. By using the wax to begin with it doesn’t take it off too easily. Some places I’ve gone right through to the wood there I really like that. I think it works for this very, very nicely. Not sure how much Gilding Wax you need? Annie Sloan Gilding Wax has concentrated metallic colour for extended coverage – in every tube there’s enough wax to cover a standard dining room chair – approximately 1.7 square metres. Many thanks to Eileen from Just Measuring Up and Megan from Two Feet First for hosting this challenge.

Yes, Rub n’ Buff can be used on metal surfaces to achieve an antique gold finish. Make sure the surface is clean and dry before applying. Can Rub n’ Buff be Used on Picture Frames for an Antique Gold Finish? Covers up to 12m2 per litre. The coverage may vary depending upon the method and rate of application and porosity of the furniture surface. How long does it take to dry?

Paint your piece of furniture in Chalk Paint™ moving your brush in every direction for a textured finish.

Want to know how to use gilding wax? Annie Sloan Gilding Wax can be applied with a lint-free cloth or a brush. It is a finishing product, so should be applied after Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax. See how Annie does it by watching this handy tutorial. You can also read our Gilding Wax Fact Sheet. Once your base colour is dry, use a clean Chalk Paint™ Brush to apply the second colour. This coat can be thinner than the first to make it easier to sand through to the base colour. So to do it, I’m just going to put a little bit on my finger… a tiny bit and then I’m going to start wiping just to show up the relief. And because there’s quite a bit of texture in the paint, it’s not applying it flatly, which is perfect. Available in 15ml tubes in five colours: Warm Gold, Bright Gold, Bright Silver, Dark Silver and Copper. Some of you won’t want to use your finger. I like it because it’s sensitive, but you could put a cloth over it, or you could use a brush. It’s just that you have to be a little bit more sensitive to it, but it’s fine. It’s your choice. To create an antique gold finish with Rub n’ Buff, first, clean the surface you want to apply it to, and make sure it’s dry. Then, apply a small amount of Rub n’ Buff onto a soft cloth or brush. Rub the cloth or brush onto the surface in a circular motion until the desired effect is achieved. Let it dry for 15-20 minutes, and then buff it with a clean cloth to bring out the shine. What’s the Difference Between Rub n’ Buff’s European Gold and Antique Gold?
