But as Swati Paradkar, the co-operative’s president knows, it’s not the bottomline that’s the highlight, it’s the long-running operation itself. “It gives women the flexibility to carry out their household chores and look after their children while also working and earning,” says Paradkar.

On 13th and 18th August 2002 a documentary film on 'Lijjat' featured on BBC World Channel in its programme 'Business Bizarre' covering the detail working of our Institution. Although poverty negatively affects all sections of society, among women it has a more deleterious effect both on them and their families (including children), according to the World Health Organization (WHO), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) with a mandate for health. In addition to these principles of professionalism and self-sufficiency, which proved to be key concepts for Lijjat’s development, the cooperative entrenched an ethos of equality and inter-dependence. Looking at the acceptance of their product in the market, the ‘seven sisters’ borrowed money from Chhaganlal Karamsi Parekh, who also became their mentor. Fondly known as ‘Chhagan Bappa’, he was a noted social worker who served in multiple relief operations, including the earthquakes in Assam and Kutch in the 1950s. a b c d e f g h Malathi Ramanathan. During the first year, the women had to stop production for four months during the rainy season as the rains would prevent the drying of the papads. The papads were kept on the cot and the stove below the cot so that the process of drying could take place in spite of the rains. [6] On 18th March 2018 President, smt. Swati R.
