Description

It’s likely you’ll want to use more than one appliance at a time. It is therefore important to factor the total wattage into your inverter calculations. Once you’ve added up the total appliance wattage, add 20%. This will tell you the minimum size inverter you’ll require. The SmartShunt is a powerful battery monitor with Bluetooth on board. It can be installed out of sight, behind the scenes – whilst live data from the device is relayed to your mobile phone or laptop via the VictronConnect App, which is free to use. The SmartShunt is a great option where space is limited or where a less cluttered installation is preferred and provides a lower cost alternative to the Victron BMV-712 Smart for those who like the bluetooth connectivity but don't want or need a permanent display.

Note that a difference between the SmartShunt and the BMV712 is that the SmartShunt has no visual or audible alarm; neither does it have a programmable relay. The battery monitor continuously measures the current flow in and out of the battery. Integration of this current over time, if it was a fixed current, boils down to multiplying current and time and gives the net amount of Ah added or removed. Let’s flesh this out a bit as getting it wrong usually causes the shunt to report 100% SOC too early (i.e. it’s still accepting charge). The SmartShunt can do more than comprehensively monitor your main battery bank – additionally you can choose to either: The latest two devices are battery-powered (coin cell style) and the battery lasts 3-6 months, working 24/7.

FAQ

This is the actual current flowing in or out of the battery. A negative current indicates that current is taken from the battery. This is the current needed for DC loads. A positive current means that current is going into the battery. This is current coming from charge sources. Keep in mind that the battery monitor will always indicate the total battery current, being the current traveling into the battery minus the current traveling out of the battery. A fully charged battery will be indicated by a value of 100.0%. A fully discharged battery will be indicated by a value of 0.0%. [ PubMed] [ Google Scholar] The Codman Hakim Programmable Valve (CHPV), also known as the programmable Medos shunt, is a double spring ball valve, where the inlet valve controls the total pressure [ 13]. This specific section consists of a synthetic ruby ball depressed in the valve seat by a 316L flat stainless-steel spring. Opening pressure of the valve is adjusted by raising the spring on a spiral polyethersulfone staircase using the magnetic field from an external handheld apparatus [ 14]. The CHPV has a range of 30 to 200 mm H 2O, with incremental steps of 10 mm H 2O. To confirm the valve setting, plain skull radiography may be needed after shunt pressure adjustment. The Codman Hakim valve can withstand up to a 3 Tesla magnetic field, although the valve must be immediately readjusted after exposure to such a field to avoid complications such as a changed shunt setting from the magnetic interference or permanent disability of the valve [ 13]. In one documented study, the Medos valve behaved very well with one-third of the valves remaining fixed after being exposed to an external magnetic field of 1.5T from an MRI [ 15]. Despite this, the study conducted still found causes of concern as in 11 of 15 occasions, when valves were set to a starting value of 200 mm H 2O, the magnetic field induced by the MRI caused the flat spring of the valve to move across the top of the cam and fall to a level below 30 mm H 2O. A drastic reduction in the pressure setting from 200 mm H 2O to 30 mm H 2O could lead to siphoning of CSF and deleterious effects on the patient, such as subdural hematomas. One of the five Medos valves tested was no longer programmable after four test runs in the MRI. Attempts to reprogram the valve were conducted after 12 hours and 30 days, both of which failed to resolve the issue. Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: A review for general practitioners. Please note that if the "Consumed Ah" reading indicates three dashes: “---” this means that the battery monitor is in an unsynchronised state. This mainly occurs when the battery monitor has just been installed or after the battery monitor has been left unpowered and is powered up again. For more information, see the Synchronising the battery monitor chapter. We hope that this document has been helpful for you. The “Tail current” parameter is expressed as a percentage of the battery capacity. To understand which size inverter you require, you will need to work out the wattage to match your requirements. To do this, you will need to add up the wattage of each 230V appliance you want to use, and find out their rated power draw. Usually the item manual will provide the wattage draw.
