About this deal

All in all Threadneedle was a engaging and thoughtful read bolstered by beautiful atmosphere and relatable characters. There’s no cliffhanger ending as the crux of this part of the story does get cleared up but I just can’t wait for the unfolding of the drama that forms Anna’s curse and emotional upheaval of that love that is assuredly going to create a hell lot of problems.

One of the things I didn’t like is that the contemporary setting could’ve been better managed. It’s set nowadays and except for phones it doesn’t show at all! It could very well be set in the 1960s – I think it would’ve been a good idea actually. There’s no mention of witches in films or popular culture for example. The dialogues didn’t really sound like today’s teen talk. I found the magic system in this story to be completely fascinating and I loved the idea that there are so many different ways to practice and that a witch has to try various types of casting to find the language that calls to them. Anna knows there is nothing fairy tale about the binders magic. No wands, no capes just knots and although brought up to shun here magical powers Anna at sixteen begins to question her life, her powers, and the death of her parents that no-one wants to talk about. The author takes us into a world that is as thrilling, dangerous and perilous as any crime novel, because crimes have been committed in the name of magic, the people who have had the powers have abused them and there is an evident web of deceit and personal interest in their actions. Anna’s position is precarious, pitted not only between her aunt and her aunt/friend, but also the binders who are ready to knot her at a moment notice and take away her magic forever. I love the girls in the coven, Rowan is my spirit animal with her exuberance for life and boys, and her mom has the similar warm mama-bear nature as Mrs. Weasley in Harry Potter. Amanda's character arc from ultra-religious to... not so much, really endeared her to me. Effie I'm so torn on. Her character has so much depth and by the end of the book, it becomes a lot clearer why she is the way she is. She's a rebellious teen who is so brash and carefree, and just wild, sometimes taking things too far. Despite those things, it's hard not to get caught up in her energy and I can't wait to see how the relationship between Anna and her continues to evolve. Attis is a sort of orbiting non-member of the coven and such an interesting character and his part in the overall story was brilliant.

The thought that went into the world building, and the manner in which magic worked was well d Sobre el final, me gustó porque AL FIN me dio las respuestas que esperaba, como dije al inicio yo estaba ahí por las respuestas porque soy curiosa y me las dio. What an utter treat this was! There is a particular joy for bookworms, especially life long bookworms, when they find a new book that instantly feels as familiar as a favourite pair of pyjamas and yet is all new, waiting to be discovered. An instant classic, which becomes part of the lexicon of books that make up you as a reader. Threadneedle is that kind of discovery, a dash of Diana Wynne Jones, a hint of A Little Princess, a soupcon of school stories, and a darkness that's all it's own. I loved it, as enthralled as those under spell in the book. The protagonists in the story are 16 yr olds and the school they belong to is like any other high school, with its own share of bullying and body-shaming and mean-girls that feel acutely authentic. Anna’s life as an orphan cared for by her aunt is nothing sort of a miracle. The abuse she has to endure in the name of magical binding is terrifying and the story unfolds in such a way that the reader is given no clue if at all the paranoid aunt has some basis for her beliefs. As new friends Effie and Attis show Anna what she is missing in her life, Anna becomes emboldened to change from NOBODY to SOMEBODY. But nothing prepares her for the magical discovery and the journey she has to bear for the truth of her parent’s death and the curse that is hanging over her head. Whether you join us with colleagues, friends or family, we’ve got the perfect ingredients for a perfect Christmas… Threadneedle is book one in a new young adult fantasy series and I can say without a doubt that I am already eagerly anticipating the next instalment. This uneven pacing is unfortunate, mostly because it delays the best parts of Threadneedle. In the latter half of her novel, Thomas offers us surprising twists and an elegant magic system. It is a breath of fresh air when Anna learns that the knot magic of the Binders is only one magical “language” and that there are infinitely more, all descended from an original seven: planetary, elemental, botanical, verbal, magic, symbolic, emotional. The reader is liberated alongside Anna when the book veers away from the stultifying environments of Aunt’s house and high school into the secret supernatural side of London. The plot begins to hum when a spell cast by the coven spirals into a dark and inescapable force. And, when Anna truly begins investigating the mystery of her parents’ death and the possibility that her own magic is cursed, she becomes someone I could actually root for.
