More than 280 German prisoners worked the Raasay mine for a two-year period. There is one contemporaneous account by a rather stunned Australianserviceman, on leave in the land of his forefathers, coming across Germanuniforms he had last encountered on the Western Front, but the people whorescued the history were two oceanographers who stumbled across the disusedRaasay mine workings in the 1980s. Focusing on the technical challenge of the mine workings, Laurence andPamela Draper managed to gather enough material for a slim but timely bookon the subject in 1990. They collected first-hand accounts from islanderswho are now dead, archive photos and superb surveys of the extensive mineworkings. Hollow, about six inches tall, it has an intricateraised rose stem crafted on one side. Only the splayed base reveals thatthis vase is made not from fine clay but beef bone, carved by one of theGerman prisoners whose name appears in raised letters on the reverse. Raasay, a long sliver of an island in the lee of the Isle of Skye, was thelocation of one of the most unlikely prisoner of war camps ever and thesetting for a remarkable story of how, away from the slaughter of thetrenches, the spirit of human kindness triumphed over enmity. Given Raasay’'s Free Presbyterian leanings, there is not usually an Armisticeceremony at the memorial. But the islanders will remember their dead, andsome will still spare a moment for the Germans whose names are carved on theboulder high on the hill, the enemies who became their wartime friends.

Enjoying an afternoon tea is a wonderful way to gather and celebrate, whether it’s an afternoon tea for two in the heart of London or a gathering of a group of friends. The hotel also delighted to offer a private dining room for parties of 10 or more. Dietary requirements As numbers grew longer and longer and more exchange switchboards were set up to handle them, each exchange was given a number to identify it by. Exchanges were given special names so that people could remember them easier. The names were determined by the numbers which identified a specific telephone-exchange. For example an exchange assigned the ID numbers ‘944’, would spell out ‘WHI’ on a lettered telephone dial. A word starting with those three letters would then be assigned as that exchange’s name. This is a real example, by the way. The exchange-name is ‘Whitehall’, which is a suburb in London. He was on radio this morning expressing as much astonishment as anyone else at the incredible complacency within the MoD, BAE Systems and Qinetiq, that were laid bare in the report published yesterday. WHItehall-1212: This was the number for New Scotland Yard, London, England. 944-1212. The number has changed slightly over the years, but as of 2009, it still ends in ‘1212’. An old 1950s British radio program dealing with the cases of Scotland Yard, was called ‘Whitehall 1212’.The force moved from Great Scotland Yard in 1890, to a newly completed building on the Victoria Embankment, and the name "New Scotland Yard" was adopted for the new headquarters. [4] An adjacent building was completed in 1906. A third building was added in 1940. In 1967, the MPS consolidated its headquarters from the three-building complex to a tall, newly constructed "New Scotland Yard" building on Broadway in nearby Victoria, on September 16 1996. In 2013, it was announced that the force would move again to the Victoria Embankment at Westminster's Curtis Green Building, which following tradition was renamed, "New Scotland Yard." [5] This move to the latest New Scotland Yard was completed in 2016. [6] [7] History [ edit ] New Metropolitan Police HQ announced as Curtis Green Building". BBC News. 20 May 2013 . Retrieved 22 May 2013. Justin Davenport (30 October 2012). "Metropolitan Police to sell New Scotland Yard". Evening Standard . Retrieved 26 May 2013. The report said he should have questioned whether it was "feasible, realistic and sensible" to achieve the 20% goal at the same pace and within the same timescale. "There should, at least, have been pause for thought," the report said. PEnnsylvania-65000: Originally ‘PENnsylvania-5000’, it was changed to PEnnsylvania-65000 when New York switched to the 2L-5N format. This number remains the oldest, continuously-used phone-number in New York City. Issued in 1919, it has belonged to the Hotel Pennsylvania in central Manhattan for the past 90 years! Dialling that number today (736-5000) still gets you the Hotel Pennsylvania, just as it did 60-odd years ago when Glenn Miller wrote his song! It’s usually spoken or written as ‘Pennsylvania six, five thousand’, because ‘Pennsylvania sixty-five thousand’ sounds a bit silly, doesn’t it?

Whitehall 1212" is the number of Scotland Yard, and the alarmed woman ringing the number of the show sets the situation. Rowlinson, Liz (18 October 2019). "Prime property buyers return to Westminster". Financial Times. London. Archived from the original on 10 December 2022 . Retrieved 24 March 2020. Overall, Mr Haddon-Cave said many of the organisational causes for the loss of XV230 echoed other major accidents including the loss of the Space Shuttles Challenger and Columbia, the Zeebrugge ferry disaster, the sinking of the Marchioness and the King’s Cross fire. There was a reason that the apprentice Ferguson and the prisoners developeda symbiotic attachment. One of his brothers was also a POW, in Germany, andbecause of that his mother was determined to keep the Germans boys on herdoorstep, starving on half rations, alive. However I puzzled over the 222 – part – it actually stands for ABBey – the physical location of the headquarters where a friend once worked – was in offices close to the St James Park Underground Station, which is in WESTMINSTER and so near WESTMINSTER +ABBEY+ – that place where we have been crowning kings & queens since Christmas day 1066!

Warnings from as early as 1998 that "the conflict between ever-reducing resources and ... increasing demands, whether they be operational, financial, legislative, or merely those symptomatic of keeping the old ac (aircraft) flying" and that close attention should be paid to safety standards were ignored. The original building at 4 Whitehall Place still has a rear entrance on Great Scotland Yard. Stables for some of the mounted branch are still located at 7 Great Scotland Yard, across the street from the first headquarters.

One of Heaven's Jewels" tells the story of the life and times of Cook and the 19th century Highland church. His preaching was preserved on many Highland bookshelves into the 20th century in copies of "Cook's Gaelic Sermons". This is the story behind the legend. were destroyed by Allied bombing in the second world war.
