All that's left to do is determine the cardinal direction. Latitude is negative, so it's in the South. Longitude is positive. That indicates a position in the east. So the coordinates of the Sydney Opera House are: 33° 51′ 31″ S 151° 12′ 51″ E. The “60 n latitude” is a country that is located at the 60th parallel north. The country has a population of about 4 million people. You might notice these are a change from our first two winds as they blow eastward, so they're called westerlies (since they blow from the west). Remember, they are blowing towards the poles, so they are deflected to the right, which causes them to blow eastward.

What country is at the northernmost point on Earth? The answer to this question might surprise you. The map shows 22 cities that are within two and a half degrees of the equator. You can find them by using the grouping function in the lower left corner of the map. Choose “Near Latitude” and then choose the 5 to -10 range. Or, search the map for “0” and choose “0 (Near Latitude).” When Jasmine Donahaye discovered in 2007, in a chance conversation with her mother, that her Israeli family had colluded in the eviction of Palestinians from their villages in the Jezreel Valley in 1948, her certainty about her family, her country and herself was overturned in an instant. Her efforts to uncover the full story, and to find out what had become of those villagers, leaves her ashamed of who she is and where she has come from. Losing Israel weaves together memoir, travel, politics and birdwatching. It’s a brave book, unflinchingly honest, and a beautiful one. What kind of climate can you expect at 60 degrees latitude?

The Earth is heated by the Sun's rays. However, this heating is uneven, as the equatorial area gets more heat than the polar areas. This is called differential heating of the Earth. Warm air at the Equator rises and moves away from the equatorial area towards the poles. This creates a low-pressure zone near the equatorial area called the Equatorial Low-Pressure Zone. This is also known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). At about 30° north and south, this air becomes cool and descends and creates high-pressure zones, called Subtropical High-Pressure Zones. Cold air at the poles descends and creates Polar High-Pressure Zones. The cold polar air moves towards the Equator, but at about 60° north and south, it starts to rise. The parallel defines the northern boundary of the Antarctic Treaty System and the Southern Ocean (though other organizations and nations, especially Australia, have different definitions). It also serves as the southern limit of the Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones in the South Pacific and Latin America. What is the name for 0 degrees longitude?

Longitude and Latitude are the two angles that define the precision location of a point on earth or the GPS coordinates. Longitude is the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian at Greenwich, England, or west of the standard meridian of a celestial object. Latitude is the angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator. The degree of the angle is between -90° and 90°. longitude and latitude coordinates are usually expressed in degrees and minutes. That difference between east and west is often quite marked and it stems from the ridge of hills that runs roughly north-south down the Shetland mainland. Propelled by the breeze, the foggy air warms up as it descends on the leeward side of the hills; it’s possible to watch the fog simply disappear as it rolls down the slope. Each year, there are many days, in summer especially, when this phenomenon (known to meteorologists as the Foehn effect) results in clear blue skies to the west of the hills while the east side of the islands – including the observatory – is blanketed in fog. Before you can interpret the map above, you need to know about the pair of numbers used to plot map coordinates: latitude and longitude. Global biomes form broad belts following lines of latitude - this is because their climate is dictated by global atmospheric circulation (see separate study notes). Variations in vegetation are due to distance from the sea, ocean currents, winds, geology and soils, altitude and relief, for example... Now this little piggy had to deal with the polar easterlies, because of where he lived. The polar easterlies are winds that are found between 60 and 90 degrees north and south latitude that blow from the poles and are deflected towards the west.

Tropical easterlies are also known as trade winds. This is because, in the past, traders from Europe would use these winds to sail across the Atlantic Ocean to come to the ''New World''. These winds blow across the surface of the Earth between the latitudes 30° north and 30° south. They blow towards the Equator in both hemispheres. In the Northern Hemisphere, they come from the northeast, so they are called north-east trade winds. In the Southern Hemisphere, they come from the southeast, so they are called south-east trade winds. While latitude is determined by the equator, humans had to make up a midpoint for longitude. In 1851, Sir George Airy chose the observatory in Greenwich, England, an area of London, to be zero longitude. Thirty years later, 25 nations met to officially declare it the prime meridian.Let's assume we want to find the distance between these two European cities. First, we need to find their coordinates: Expressing the direction with positive or negative values is common in the DD format of coordinates. It's less popular with DMS or DDM. While much of the worth is solidly within hemisphere quadrants, there are many cities that straddle one of the zero points. These cities, by definition, must be either along the equator or the prime meridian (i.e., have a similar longitude to London). The Equator is marked by a line of zero degrees latitude that divides the Earth into two equal hemispheres (north and south). The Prime Meridian is an imaginary line at zero degrees longitude. How many oceans are there on the planet? Accordingly, "north of 60" is an expression often used for the territories, although parts of Nunavut (the islands in Hudson Bay and James Bay) are located south of the 60th parallel, and parts of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador are located north, to the east of Hudson Bay. A 1990s TV show on CBC about life in the Northwest Territories was called North of 60.
