Description

Chinese evergreens are not drought-tolerant – no more than 30% of the soil can dry out before risking plant health. A relatively new cultivar, the pictum tricolor is a must-have for any plant collection. Gardening enthusiasts covet this stunning plant due to its distinctive leaf pattern.

Golden Bay is one of the less fussy Aglaonemas, able to tolerate temperatures down to 7ºC. The plant can grow up to 1.2m tall and can grow pretty much anywhere.

Watering and feeding

Don’t expose the Stardust to direct sun – it can thrive in indirect light down to artificial lighting.

Propagating Chinese evergreens is not too difficult. To propagate your Aglaonema, you will need head cuttings which are cut from the mother plant in spring. To make a head cutting, take a sharp, disinfected knife and cut off a 10 cm piece of healthy shoot from the upper part of the plant. Remove the lower leaves and prepare a pot with a suitable growing medium, such as our Plantura Organic Herb & Seeding Compost. This soil is peat-free and due to its loose structure, offers optimal growing conditions for young plants. It also supports strong root growth which is particularly important in the early stages as this will ensure the plant can supply itself with sufficient nutrients later in life. Slightly moisten the growing medium and insert the cutting up to the base of the remaining leaf. If kept at around 22 to 24 °C, roots should form after about six weeks. Place the pots in a moderately bright spot and keep the soil evenly moist. You can also put a transparent bag over the cutting to increase the humidity but be sure to air this out from time to time. Plants of the genus are native to humid, shady tropical forest habitat. [3] Cultivation and uses [ edit ] Aglaonema costatum Let’s look in more detail at how to grow the red Aglaonema ‘Siam Aurora’ as a stunning houseplant. Where to Grow Aglaonema ‘Siam Aurora’ Variations within the aglaonema species highlight differences in leaf size and shape. Some plants might exhibit narrow leaves; others have broad leaves consistent with most descriptions of the plant. The crispum is native to the Philippines, and is one of the larger cultivars. The glossy, dark green foliage can reach 0.3m in length, with an elliptical leaf shape. The edges are often a mottled silvery green. Most propagation of Aglaonema is done with cuttings and by dividing the basal shoots. Care of the houseplant involves protecting it from cold temperatures and excessive sunlight and removing any inflorescences that develop, which can prolong the life of the plant. It requires moist soil, and while some cultivars require a small amount of fertilizer, plants are easily injured when oversupplemented. [3] Aglaonema are prone to false mites ( Brevipalpus californicus). They may also acquire populations of nematodes, such as root-knot nematodes and Pratylenchus species, which cause root lesions. [8] Pathogens include the fungus Myrothecium roridum and bacteria such as Pseudomonas cichorii, Erwinia chrysanthemi, and Xanthomonas campestris, which can all cause leaf spot. Colletotrichum fungi can cause anthracnose. [9] Pruning Aglaonema Red Star can benefit from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and encourage new growth. You can trim off any yellow or brown leaves, as well as any stems that are growing too long. Siam Aurora’ is a beautiful type of red Aglaonema – tropical evergreen perennial with stunning exotic red and green pointed leaves. Red Aglaonema houseplants such as the ‘Siam Aurora’ cultivar add color and tropical accents to any interior décor. The many shades of red and sometimes dark pink can brighten up a room. What’s more, the red Siam Aglaonema plant is also easy to care for indoors. Our personal recommendation is a peat-based mix with perlite or bark to improve drainage. Look for soil that is lightly acidic (pH 5.6–6.5) with a reasonable concentration of nitrogen.

During the growing season from spring to autumn, fertilise your Chinese evergreen once a fortnight. Our Plantura Liquid Houseplant Food is ideal for Aglaonema plants and strengthens both the leaves and roots. Simply mix the fertiliser with water as per the instructions and water your Chinese evergreen. This fertiliser ensures the necessary nutrients are readily available to the plant. The ideal soil for red Aglaonema plants should retain enough moisture without becoming waterlogged. A combination of peat moss and perlite is perfect for creating a light, aerated growing medium. It prevents the roots from becoming soggy and starting to rot—which would eventually kill your plant. How to Water ‘Siam Aurora’ The Siam Aurora or Red Siam is a less common Chinese evergreen cultivar, since it’s actually quite new! Some scientific research suggests that varieties of Aglaonema help clean household air. One study found that certain species of Chinese evergreens help remove harmful chemicals from the air. For example, Aglaonema houseplants helped reduce airborne toxins such as xylene, benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde. Many people chase after this variety for its distinctive appearance, but also for its characteristics. Pink Dalmatian grows to only 0.45m tall and can cope with shade, though it prefers bright, indirect light.Aglaonema is a great choice for indoor plants, as they are tolerant to low light levels. There are many different varieties of aglaonema, The leaves are also very long and slender, making this plant a great choice for adding height to a display. Aglaonema crispum is one of the older varieties, first recorded in the early 1900s. It is unique for its stemless growth, and even produces some berries! Red Aglaonemas are broadleaved tropical houseplants with large green, red, and sometimes pink leaves. Also called the Chinese evergreen plant, the red Aglaonema plants include cultivars of the flowering plant genus Aglaonema. Varieties of Aglaonema with pink and red leaves include ‘Siam Aglaonema,’ ‘Pink Dalmatian,’ ‘Ultra Pink,’ ‘Red Emerald,’ and ‘Super Red Star.’ Aglaonema pictum ‘Tricolor’: arguably the best-known variety of this species, the ‘Tricolor’ has camouflaged patterned foliage with light green, dark green and silver colouring.
