I loved the setting of the bookstore. Val runs an all night bookstore on a college campus. I thoroughly enjoyed the bookstore and can't wait to spend more time there. Helen pursed her lips, as though searching for a delicate way to put it. “He kept Henry at a distance these last few years. For his ward to show up at our door in the middle of the night, I’d imagine the situation has to be particularly dire.” Amazingly, The Anatomical Shape of a Heart is an art book! I haven’t read too many art books, but I have enjoyed basically every one I have read. This particular book features two contrasting art styles: graffiti and dead body / anatomy drawing. I loved this because normally, art books take the typical painting or sketching. The Anatomical Shape of a Heart takes on a type of art that I didn’t know existed, making this book extremely unique and enjoyable.

Then Mrs. Clearwater–Helen–was there, pulling her into an embrace and murmuring nonsense words as she stroked Elly’s hair. That set off another spate of tears. She couldn’t remember the last time someone had held her like that, not even Father Value. No, that wasn’t true. She could remember, but it only dredged up a deeper hurt.Especially since the book has decided to lodge part of itself in a college student that they’d both rather didn’t die. He’s gorgeous, he’s funny, he’s talented and he’s got a secret no one would ever guess about him. He’s one of the city’s most wanted graffiti artists. His life is definitely not perfect. He’s got some major things happening, things that he can’t exactly be up front about for reasons I can’t even tell you because I’m not a spoiler! The one issue I had with NIGHT OWLS was the weird way the point of view changed- sometimes it felt like it switched mid-paragraph. It got a little frustrating because it felt like the reader was jumping between the different character’s heads. However, it wasn’t ever an issue of being confused as to who was the focus, it was mainly the jerkiness of the transitions that bothered me. Part of the reason for this prejudice is that sleep science is the missing piece of the public health puzzle. Our culture mistakenly associates sleeping little and rising early with virtue. It is often extolled as a habit of successful people: for instance in the fascination with Margaret Thatcher’s four-hour rest, or articles about “sleepless-elite” CEOs who start their days with a 4am jog. Yet this belies a glaring inconsistency: around eight hours of good-quality sleep is essential for better health for almost everybody. Just promise me one thing,” he continued. “If it’s not good, tell me. Don’t just get angry and resent me. I’d rather us not do anything and keep what we have now than screw things up between us. Okay?”

This book is loaded with over 750 diverse photographs that are used to help inform the reader about owls. Owls of the World: A Photographic Guide was written by the world’s most notable owl expert, Heimo Mikkola. Dr. Mikkola is associated with the University of Eastern Finland, Helsinki, and is known for having traveled across 128 different countries over the past 40 years, journaling on all 249 species of owls. This book summarizes his findings, with all the complex details penned down as simply as possible. Therefore, while this may be a tedious read for some, it’s the most well-structured book for an avid owl enthusiast. Natural night owls are fundamentally different to insomniacs or people who stay up until the early hours because of family or work circumstances. Being a night owl isn’t a problem – unless you’re trying to fit into a schedule that doesn’t suit your natural cycle. The large cast kept me from falling entirely in love. They were appealing character types, but there were so many main characters to be sold on at once. (Especially when almost all of them have at least a little mysterious past to be revealed.) I would've preferred a tighter focus in NIGHT OWLS, perhaps just on Valerie and Elly, to be expanded in the future books of the series.

Write Review:

A recent study of a modern-day hunter-gatherer tribe found that during a three-week period, there were only 18 minutes during which all of the 33 tribe members were asleep simultaneously. Night Owls is so much fun! The writing is fast, the characters are witty, the ending left me wanting more. Night Owls definitely captured the addictive quality of the urban fantasy genre.
