Description

Gyois accompanied by two short stories – The Sad Tale of the Principal Postand The Enigma of Amigara Fault. The latter is one of Junji Ito’s best-known short stories and tells of a cliff face with human-shaped holes. People are compelled, to the point of obsession, to go in them when they realise they perfectly match them. It’s great that the English speakers are reading my works and that companies are publishing my works, and I’m very happy for just that,” Ito said in an interview with Anime News Network. “Even for me, I was influenced by American movies growing up, and it’s a dream that people here enjoy my manga.”

Psychological horror is also prevalent throughout his work. Characters will often be tormented by supernatural forces or driven mad by a compulsion. Ito will amplify these scenarios through his method of illustrating eyes, often up close and with extreme intensity. Ito has mentioned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro as an influence, but del Toro has also been influenced by Ito’s work. Ito recalls, “20 years ago, director of Shape of Water,Guillermo del Torocame to Japan and said he was a big fan and wanted to see me…I’m very happy that he’s a fan of mine and enjoys my work.” In fact, the two were working together on a game called Silent Hills ( unfortunately, the project was canceled). What you’re getting here is the best of both worlds: Dazai’s original story with new life breathed into it through the art of Junji Ito. Junji Ito Manga Short Stories If you’ve ever done a passive search for Ito, or if you’re already a big Ito fan, then you will have seen all the jokes and memes that have grown out of this story. There’s a sense that these writers dare to describe what should never be described. What takes Junji Ito’s manga one step beyond even the stories of H.P. Lovecraft is that he dares to draw them as well as write them.

Honored Ancestors

This reminds me of Stephen King, whose lesser-talked-about short horror stories are far smarter and more frightening than any of his novels. The story centers around two hospital patients suffering from seemingly psychological maladies. The first, Mami, is a young woman whose unidentified illness fills her every waking moment with the dread of death. The other patient, Mukoda, claims his dreams elongate each night, as he feels days and months slipping by from just a normal night’s rest. Speaking of imagination, Junji Ito’s influence stretches from other horror manga legends like Kazuo Umezu, author of the infamous Orochi: Blood, all the way to the previously mentioned originator of eldritch horror literature H.P. Lovecraft.

Painter (from Tomie), a story about a strange but beautiful woman named Tomie who wishes for an artist to accurately capture her beauty, and all the misfortune that happens as a result... Slightly disappointed that one of the stories (Painter) is from Tomie, but I suppose this is partly for people who haven't got that far yet, and the differences between the outline and the finished story make it interesting, for many of the other stories too.

TKO Presents ‘Graveneye’ is a chilling horror story

The reason for this is revealed in the story’s twisted, climactic ending and it is a doozy that sends shivers down your spine. Shiver/The chill: un relato con un objeto maldito, body horror extremo y un atmosfera tetrica y asfixiante. 3.5/5 If there is one Junji Ito manga that best encapsulates his Lovecraftian inspiration, it’s this one. Lovecraft understood just how vast and unknowable the spaces above and below us are.
