This renders Katy an invalid for a period of three or so years, and in that time, Katy loses every ounce of spunk and creativity she ever had. She transforms into a perfect little housewife, and becomes obsessed with what is ladylike, and what is not; in short, becomes a completely nauseating Little Miss Perfect. (To such an extent that in the next book, What Katy Did At School, she starts a "Society for the Suppression of Unladylike Conduct.) I really enjoy the Katy books and so appreciate the subtle ways they speak truth. Make sure this series is on your reading list! Later on, Katy goes on a swing she is forbidden to go on by her aunt Izzy, although, her aunt hasn't given a reason for this, so obviously, Katy goes on it anyway and gets a spinal injury which prevents her from getting into scapes for the next four years.

Dan...last but not least, karakter spesial yaitu adik Mrs Ashe yg lebih muda 7 tahun dari Mrs Ashe, Ned Worthington. Spesial karena.... Baca sendiri ya hehe. Day after day she asked Papa with quivering lip: “Mayn’t I get up and go down stairs this morning?””These memories were not mine. I was an English child, and the descriptions of small-town America in bygone years were alien to me, but of course I could enjoy these tales, and up to a point identify with the heroine, the:

Imogen Clark: a classmate of Katy and Clover; a silly, affected girl. Initially she enthralls Katy with her romantic imagination, but she proves dishonest and self-centered and, as her father predicted, Katy grows disillusioned with her. Well, this is mighty awkward. You all know of one of those books you adored as a child but reread as a feminist adult and see things from an entirely different perspective? What Katy Did was one of those books. Katy Carr is now 21 years old, and gets a chance to visit Europe. Mrs Ashe is a slightly older widow friend with a little girl named Amy, and she asks Katy to be their travel companion. Of course Katy jumps at the opportunity. Mrs Ashe has a younger brother named Ned Worthington; a dishy naval lieutenant she hopes to touch base with over there. (Are your romance antennae twitching?) Coolidge modeled Katy on her own childhood self, and the other 'Little Carrs' on her brothers and sisters. [1] The title is a play on the katydid, a family of insects – which explains the insects on the first-edition book cover.

Quite an accurate summary! I think Susan Coolidge did like traveling, though -- I read all the miseries in this book as partly realism, partly warning her (wealthy young American) readers not to expect their own European tours to be completely comfortable. But she liked traveling for the same reasons Katy does -- seeing picturesque new sights, meeting places previously known from books, and perhaps a bit of shopping (presents for friends of course!). Overall, this was a pleasant read. I was initially a bit ambivalent about this series because the first book really swung from a domestic adventure to Pollyanna-ish, but having followed Katy through a few years, it’s safe to say that she’s a lovely character and one that I would like to be friends with. That said, I still wonder who would read this – the first book is for children and this is for older readers, but it’s so unlike today’s YA that I’m struggling to think of who else would like it! What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge is now published by Alma Classics. This fresh new edition is wonderfully illustrated by Susan Hellard. Susan Coolidge is the pen name of Sarah Chauncey Woolsey. The characters in What Katy Did were based on the author Sarah Woolsey and her family.

Susan Coolidge lived in America from 1835 to 1905. She was born into an upper class family and her real name was Sarah Chauncy Woolsey. She worked as a nurse in the American Civil War and then began her writing career. Her editor was also the editor of Louisa M Alcott who was having huge success with her book Little Women. The editor suggested that Susan try her hand at the same kind of family story and the five books about the irrepressible Katy Carr followed. They followed the fortunes and misfortunes of the Carr family, from childhood, through school and travels in Europe, to marriage. The books: What Katy Did, What Katy Did at School, What Katy Did Next, Clover and In the High Valley brought fame to Susan Coolidge. The titles of the first three books are a pun on the North American grasshopper-like insect, the katydid, whose noise was not only responsible for its name but inspired Susan Coolidge! When I was little, I read a ton of older children's books. I read authors like L. M. Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott, Eleanor H. Porter, Kate Douglas Wiggin, Margaret Sidney, and so on. For whatever reason, I totally missed reading any of Susan Coolidge's Katy series, though I was aware that they existed. This is possibly why I did not enjoy them much when I read them at age 24. When Aunt Izzie dies two years later, Katy takes over the running of the household, and after a further two years, her spine is healed, and she learns to walk again. I particularly loved Katy's journey through story-book England. Katy had a penchant for visiting places she had read about in novels, one such being 'Wimpole Street'. Papa (Dr Philip Carr): the children's father, a very busy doctor who has been a single parent, firm but understanding, since his wife's death when Katy was eight.

Corsets: What You Need To Know

The first part of the book shows how the children in the Carr family don’t behave very well and how in the second part they all learn a valuable lesson and work to behave and mend their ways. There are many wonderful lessons in this book. Cousin Helen: Papa's niece; she cannot walk because of an accident years ago. Despite her suffering she is amusing, cheerful, and kind; just what Katy wants to be. After Katy's accident, Cousin Helen helps her adjust to her illness. Clover Carr: the second-eldest sister adores Katy and follows her in everything she does. Clover is pretty and clever with a cheerful disposition; she is described as loving everyone and is loved by everyone in return. Katy's name was Katy Carr who is the main character. She is full of life and fun and lives in the town of Burnet.
