This essay was curated by The Subcultures Network, which was formed in 2011 to facilitate research on youth cultures and social change, and commissioned as part of the National Lottery Heritage Funded project to build the online Museum of Youth Culture. Being developed by YOUTH CLUB, the Museum of Youth Culture is a new destination dedicated to celebrating 100 years of youth culture history through photographs, ephemera and stories.

Also, if you like Hogwarts and want to take pictures in a structure looking vaguely similar to it, please head to the main university campus on Oxford Road! Also, I am very proud to say that the university has to its credit 25 Nobel Prize winners and is one of the best universities (and also has one of the best Physics & Astronomy departments 😉 ) in the world. The idea of avoiding consuming meat came about thanks to sermons by Reverend William Cowherd held at the Beefsteak Chapel. The reverend was so into the vegetarian movement that he actually wrote vegetarian hymns to sing to his congregation. You really can’t make this stuff up. I don’t know if there is any list that will be able to list literally all the pubs interspersed in the city, but this one does a good job (yes, visitmanchester.com is my go-to for most recommendations). Imperial War Museum: Learning about wars and conflicts is not everyone’s thing. It turns out that it indeed is my thing. I always mention this museum to people interested in exploring the city. It has a permanent exhibition which mainly shows exhibits pertaining to the two World Wars. There is also a space for temporary exhibitions, which deal with different topics over time and are on display for a few months. The city centre itself is wonderful stretching from Ancoats to Castlefield along a grubby street and canal network with architecture that marries modernity and history. It has the Northern Quarter awash with independent shops with Fred Aldous and Unitom at its epicentre in the surprisingly photogenic Stevenson Square.
