Both synthetic and natural waterproofers appear on our list. Many synthetic waterproofers are silicone-based, and non-synthetics contain natural waxes and oils like mink oil or beeswax. Both provide a strong seal against water — Eduard Shimunov of Cobbler Express says silicone-based sprays are like “an umbrella over your shoe,” and Andrade compares mink oil to “a layer of wax on a brand-new car” — and natural products have the added bonus of nourishing the material beneath the surface. (For leather shoes, experts recommend taking the extra step of conditioning them before applying a waterproofer, which facilitates a better watertight seal and preserves the healthiest, best-looking version of your shoe until the next application.)

Whatever your opinion, there are clear advantages, especially on side glass or rear windows with no wipers. So which is best? We tried the latest products, including two cleaners, to find the best rain repellent. How we tested them A classic rain repellent, Rain-X is readily available and quite possibly the best-selling rain repellent range here in the UK. The big benefit to Rain-X is the ease of application. The perfect waterproofing product makes your gear feel like new—waterproof and breathable again, with no negative changes to the material. That’s precisely what Grangers Performance Repel Plus, a non-aerosol spray from the British brand, did for an older pair of rain pants that were wetting out. In fact, the waterproofing on these pants was better after applying this spray than it was before. On the other hand, FAS polymers like Aquapel chemically bond with your glass, allowing them to last an extremely long time. However, the process used to create this bond diminishes its ability to shed water, meaning they don’t work quite as well as PDMS polymers at repelling water. Application is also worth paying attention to. There are three options; spray-on, roll-on and applicator-applied examples. Each has its pros and cons, with spray-on options the easiest to apply but least durable and applicator examples vice versa. Rain repellents are similar to car waxes in many ways, sometimes featuring minimum temperatures and directions to apply out of direct sunlight. Longer-lasting options may also feature a curing time. Once you’ve finished, you can embrace a moist-free car interior if you decide to opt for an in-car dehumidifier. What about durability?

It requires no buffing or curing time, instead wiping straight off after spraying it on. It's not the most refined of products, and the protection offered can be measured in weeks, not months, but it's good value for money and will also double as a decent glass cleaner too. You want to ensure you apply the waterproofing agent correctly as this affects its effectiveness. Waterproofing spray comes in either a spray bottle or a can, allowing you to apply it directly. A spray can is much easier to handle as it applies the agent evenly on the entire surface. (Or just avoid them in general.) And aerosol sprayers, though they work well for consumers, also have a negative environmental impact. If you’re seeking to prevent those issues, choose a non-aerosol spray that doesn’t contain PFCs.

The sprayer works well, so application is easy. After washing the pants, we sprayed them while they were still wet, blotted off areas where the excess product had pooled with a damp towel, and then threw them in the machine dryer on low, though you can also let your items air-dry if needed. When trying the pants again, water beaded off them instead of soaking through in the spots where it was previously wetting out, and the breathability was again excellent. Apply with a dry cloth and wipe the Rain-X Rain Repellent in a circular, overlapping motion; once you’ve allowed the product to dry, re-apply again and, once the final coat is dry, remove the final layer with a dry cloth or a sprinkling of water. Waterproofing sprays aren't just for shoes — you can use them across many products, from clothing to gear to furniture. So if you're planning on waterproofing your shoes, consider what else you might be interested in protecting. That way, you can buy a single spray that covers multiple products.There was minimal streaking from the repellent when freshly applied, even when the wiper blades were going full speed. And some glasses even come with self-cleaning coatings that help repel dirt and grime.
