Scrape off old plumber’s putty or caulk from the top of the drain opening as well as under the rim of the flange. If your kitchen/bathroom sink is leaking from below, you will need to remove it, apply a new sealant and then install it again. You could also be installing a new sink and wondering which sealant to use to create a watertight and long-lasting seal. Just like with the kitchen sink flange, apply a good size of plumber’s putty or silicone caulk bead under the rim of the flange. Start by disconnecting the pivot rod from the clevis rod. Seeing as the clevis rod has several holes, mark the hole in which the pivot rod is connected to prevent having to do adjustments later.

The reason our sink plugs wouldn’t hold water was because the rubber washer underneath needed to be replaced. You can pull apart the plug by untwisting the middle handle part, which allows you to replace the rubber washer underneath. This is the seal that allows the plug to stop water going down the drain. It didn’t matter how I contorted the washer, the plugs wouldn’t keep the water in. Side note: some people don't trust these gaskets as they can leak. I've never had any problems. But you can use a ring of putty or silicone instead, then go to the next stage and remove the excess. Screwing the Kitchen Sink Waste Drain If you decide to use silicone caulk, apply a bead of the same under the rim of the sink flange as well as around the sink drain opening. Carefully insert the flange through the drain opening and push it down strongly to get a strong seal. That is the only difference between the silicone caulk and plumber’s putty installation. Just like with the plumber’s putty, excess caulk will squeeze from around the flange. Wipe if off before it hardens. Testing the Seal

Ever had a leaking kitchen sink basket strainer plug? How do you clean your kitchen sink?

First, just for demonstration purposes, here's the bottom drain section. The pipe ideally should aim towards the overflow drain (as above). The other end has a screw type fitting but the pipe that goes out to the drain is smaller and has no thread on it so it sort of slots over a smaller ring of the internal pipe work and then the circular plastic screw cap/head screws onto the internal pipe work. The P-trap also traps potential drain clogs. This prevents them from clogging up the drainpipe farther away where unclogging it would be harder. For seals that last a lifetime, try UniBond Triple Protection Anti-Mould Sealant. It was voted “best in class” for anti-mould protection in independent tests, and comes with a staggering 35 year guarantee. You may never have to reseal the kitchen sink again! I headed to Bunnings, because I had to get some plants, and enquired if I could get the new rubber seals so I wouldn’t have to replace the whole plug.

The problem is i have a bit of a leak at this joint, even then the screw end is tightened as far as it will go the outside pipe can slide and move in/out (though to get it completely out would take a good pull). If you have a pop-up bathroom sink stopper (which is the case with most bathroom sinks), you will first need to remove the stopper before you can remove the flange. This is actually a really simple task so let is get down to it. There are a handful of ways you could do this. I decided that instead of drilling a hole for another waste pipe, I linked my washing machine hose to the sink.

This means my washing machine waste and sink waste are hooked up and drain in the same place. Or, you could bore another hole through the wall, which I didn't want to do. How to Attach The Kitchen Sink Waste Here's a step by step guide on how I fitted the kitchen sink waste pipe and trap in my utility. It also includes a trap connected to a washing machine hose. While holding the overflow kitchen sink waste pipe, thread the screw through from the sink side to grip it. Attaching the Overflow Pipe to the Kitchen Sink Waste Drain

The P-trap is the U-shaped part of your sink drain which looks like an inverted P. It holds a little amount of water at all times, preventing sewer gases from coming up to your house. Note, don't rush this as you don't want to accidentally slip and scratch or dint your sink. Installing the Overflow Pipe for the Kitchen Sink Waste Plumber’s putty and silicone caulk are 2 of the best sealants for sink drains. While both will create a good seal, plumber’s putty is the most preferred for sink drain flanges while silicone caulk provides the best seal between the edges of the sink and the countertop. With plumber’s putty you can test the seal immediately. It however takes about 3 hours for silicone caulk to dry and up to 24 hours to cure. To test whether the sink drain flange is sealing properly, follow the following steps:Yes, you can continue to return items as normal as long as you follow the government guidelines about leaving your house.

Remove old sealant. Scrape it off with a putty knife or cutting tool. Make the job even easier with UniBond Silicone Sealant Remover. Apply the sealant. When you’re happy with the flow and you’re sure that the surface is completely dry, apply the sealant around the sink. Even pressure is important; maintain a steady flow to create a smooth layer of sealant that prevents moisture and mildew. Again, excess plumber’s putty or caulk will squeeze out from around the flange as a sign that you have a good seal. Scrap it off with a putty knife. I now have a working tap and sink that I can use when cleaning up after food blog cooking sessions at Tastefully Vikkie. More Fitting a Kitchen Projects

I recently cut a hole in my utility kitchen worktop as part of my latest YouTube series. However, after plumbing up my new tap, I then needed to learn how to install the kitchen sink waste and trap. If you clean the drain with water, make sure that your dry it completely. You can as well wipe it with a bit of rubbing alcohol. If you put your plug in, and it still leaks, you may need a plumber to come out and replace the whole plug and waste.
