Aram Khachaturian conducts the Orchestra in a concert and recording session, not long before his death. The Orchestra visits Vietnam for the first time – the first British orchestra to do so – for an open air concert in March, performed to around 60,000 people. Our Centenary Gala Concert on 9 June is attended by the LSO’s Patron, Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh. LSO Pulse, a new app and loyalty scheme for students, is launched. The app later became Student Pulse, a pioneering programme encompassing the concerts of multiple London orchestras and venues.

In our second World Tour we visit the Asia and Australia, conducted by István Kertész and Colin Davis. Much of the text, be it in the instrument or composer section, is repetitive and the necessity to fill in from the internet is disappointing. When it was 'working' we enjoyed it immensely, when it wasn't we struggled through. Why couldn't they edit/ finish it to get the fine product they are on the verge of?!Our first BBC radio broadcast from Southwark Cathedral is conducted by Vaughan Williams (his own ‘Pastoral’ Symphony). We record Concerto! with Michael Tilson Thomas – a major TV series made for Channel 4 with Dudley Moore, which wins an Emmy Award. The engaging text is broken into three sections: an introduction to each instrument of the orchestra from the cello to the timpani, the stories of famous composers from Bach to Stravinsky and an explanation of different musical styles from Baroque to Modern. Each step of the way, children can listen to actual musical examples of what they are learning about. Young readers will hear the sound of an actual violin as they study the instrument and enjoy the playful tune of a Mozart minuet as they read about the composer's precocious exploits as a child. Examples of Music: Schedrin"s "Carmen Suite, Section Changing of the Guard," Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 4"

Many of the world’s greatest artists come to our Barbican concert to celebrate Mstislav Rostropovich’s 75th birthday. Everything You Need to Know About You ARE An ARTist Homeschool Art Lessons– simple and easy art for homeschoolers. Homeschool Art and Music Curriculum for Busy Families– The Homeschool Art and Music Curriculum from You ARE An ARTiST organized art and music appreciation using a variety of resources so you can simply open the schedule and with little preparation you are off and learning! What else? "Basso continuo" isn't just the bass; it's the chordal (typically keyboard) part as well. Information on the trombone "played with seven fundamental slide positions called pedal notes" is off-base and confused. No mention of the pipe organ. No mention of baritone horn, euphonium, alto horn. Xylophones do not have metal bars. The endpapers are not drawn to scale, so flute, alto flute, and bass flute all appear around the same length. I might quibble that the basset horn doesn't need to appear with the modern woodwinds (E-flat sopranino and E-flat contralto and BB-flat contrabass are far more commonly used).

It’s giving all of us a much more educated listening ear, with leads to a greater appreciation for what we are hearing. Throughout the book information is presented attractively, with illustrations, short paragraphs, and boxes to set apart different topics. We become the first British orchestra to visit Japan, with Pierre Monteux, Antal Dorati and Georg Solti. BBC TV, with David Attenborough directing, accompany the Orchestra to make a Monitor programme.

BBC TV presents the first André Previn’s Music Night – the popular television series, which brings classical music and the LSO to the attention of a huge new audience. The book includes quotations about music from famous people or the composers and musicians themselves. This builds our sense of a community of music appreciators, and helps us see the importance of learning about classical music. Through the selections on the CD we’ve found music we wanted to listen to in its entirety, like Carnival of the Animals. Then, we turned to Part I: Composers. In a similiar manner, the chapters are arranged by Era: baroque, classical, romantic and modern. After a brief introduction to what made the era unique and how it fit into the progression or development of orchestral expression, individual composers of the era are biographied. Silly facts about them are fun, and the opportunity to listen to specific works that demonstrate their style is fantastic. But once again, there are gaps that have to be filled in. Music selections are NOT provided for ALL the composers and we had to fill in again from the internet.

Our 75th Anniversary celebrations include a Gala Concert at the Royal Fesitval Hall in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales. Lord Howard de Walden is appointed Honorary President in gratitude for his financial support of the Orchestra.

The orchestra is first noted in 1597 when Giovanni Gabrieli (1557-1612) wrote the Sacre Symphoniae. It then evolves in the Baroque period with the standardization of the violin and the introduction of the oboe. During the Classical period, brass instruments are added to the orchestra as are timpani and pianos. Woodwinds did not take center stage until the Romantic period of the 19th century. Finally in the 1900's, additional percussion instruments are used, jazz emerges, and computers are used to enhance sound. The studio album Promises by Floating Points, legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and the LSO is released to great critical acclaim, making the shortlist for the Mercury Prize. Michael Tilson Thomas and the Orchestra embark upon a tour of the US West Coast to celebrate his 70th birthday and 40 years working with the Orchestra. A new residency at Salle Pleyel in Paris is announced, beginning with Bernard Haitink conducting Beethoven. We make our first World Tour: to Israel, Turkey, Iran, India, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and the United States, where we give a concert at the United Nations HQ in New York. A new visual identity, by The Partners, is launched along with Sir Simon Rattle’s first season as Music Director. It immediately garners critical acclaim, including several international design and branding awards.
