Butler appeared in The CW show “Arrow” and horror film “The Intruders” before landing his final tween series “The Shannara Chronicles,” based on fantasy author Terry Brooks’ novels. Filmed in New Zealand, the MTV show began production shortly after Butler’s mother died of cancer in 2014. It was after leaving “The Shannara Chronicles” that Butler starred in “The Iceman Cometh” on Broadway, leading him to connect with co-star Denzel Washington and the Academy Award winner suggesting Butler to lead Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” While the couple keeps their relationship pretty private, details have slowly emerged here and there about how they spend their time together. The duo made things red carpet official when they posed for pics at the 2022 Met Gala, though they had initially dodged dating rumors after they were first spotted together in late December 2021. News of the budding romance began one month after Kaia ended things with her ex-boyfriend, Jacob Elordi, while Austin Butler broke up with his girlfriend of nine years, Vanessa Hudgens, in January 2020. By July, after undergoing months of Elvis workshops — and an unsolicited call from Broadway co-star Washington, who told Luhrmann, “You’re in for a surprise when you see the work ethic of this young man,” said the director — Butler had beaten out the likes of Miles Teller and Harry Styles for the role. Then the work of finding and translating Presley’s heart and soul began. Everyone has some notion of who Elvis was, “but what gets lost is that the guy is just a guy — it’s the humanity of him,” Luhrmann said. “My number one mission was to humanize him. And that might have been my mission, but Austin Butler was the one that flew the plane. ... It was probably the hardest thing. This is the most impersonated man on the planet. But the humanity, Austin had from the get-go.”

Butler is set to star in and produce Sony’s 3000 Pictures film adaptation of best-selling author Don Winslow’s “City on Fire.” Months of rehearsals led to the start of production in Australia in January 2020. Butler worked with voice and movement coaches to organically channel Presley whenever Luhrmann wanted to “unleash” Butler to improvise in character. That March, Hanks and wife Rita Wilson became the first Hollywood stars to announce they’d tested positive for COVID-19, and the “Elvis” production was shut down.

Then the universe called. Or rather, his agent did, to say that filmmaker Baz Luhrmann was making a movie about Presley’s life. Butler had a pinch-me experience while filming Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Butler plays Manson follower Tex in the Oscar-winning epic led by Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, but it was the in-between moments on set that Butler remembers best. Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Ben Radcliffe, Edward Ashley, and James Murray are among the ensemble cast for the WWII-set series which is being produced in part with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television banner, along with Hanks’ Playtone. Consider it the third part of a trilogy with “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.”
