EmerAid ® Intensive Care HDN™ Canine is a therapeutic product to be used only under the supervision of a veterinarian. Begin with 25% to 30% of resting energy requirements and gradually adjust the volume and number of feedings based on patient condition. A volume of 5-10 ml/kg/feeding is generally well tolerated via esophagostomy or gastric tube. Resting energy requirements can be calculated using the following equation [70 x BW(kg) 0.75].

EmerAid is nutritionally designed to give each debilitated animal the best possible chance of recovery: Intensive care nutrition products are indicated for debilitated, cachectic patients; individuals with reduced digestive capacity, highly stressed patients needing the minimal numbers of feedings, and/or patients that require additional calories to maintain or gain weight. The 400 g (3.5 oz) pouch and 2 kg (4.4 lb) tub come with a red scoop that has both large (1 tablespoon) and small (1 teaspoon) ends. Use the smaller end of the scoop to prepare a relatively small volume of formula. To prepare larger volumes of EmerAid, fill the large end of the scoop with powder. Once the patient is stable and doing well on an EmerAid Intensive Care, the diet can be gradually transitioned to EmerAid Sustain Herbivore or the patient’s regular food under the guidance of a veterinarian. Emeraid Intensive Care Omnivore is a prescription diet for omnivorous exotic animal species with critical health conditions, including companion birds, types of lizards, and certain small mammals.Hydrolyzed starch supplies glucose, disaccharides, and oligosaccharides, which avoids the osmotic problems associated with feeding only glucose. It can also be fed in combination with other Emeraid products to a variety of species including the gerbil, hamster, rat, hedgehog as well as the bearded dragon, chameleon, skink, box turtle, and red-eared slider. Rabbits, both domestic and wild, have been fed EmerAid Herbivore for many years. These animals are known to have a very delicate digestive system and are regular patients in veterinary clinics and wildlife centers. Emeraid Omnivore® is a therapeutic diet designed to be used only under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator. The EmerAid System for Exotic Animal Critical Care or “Exotic EmerAid” is designed to provide life-saving nutrition to a wide variety of species during the first few days of care. EmerAid is designed to help when an animal is unable to eat on its own due to starvation, injury or illness, and the digestive system has begun to shut down. These therapeutic diets should be used only under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator. Store Emeraid in a cool, dry space, and refrigerate powder after opening. Emeraid Omnivore has an 18-month shelf life from the time of production, and should be used within 9 months after opening.

Fill the syringe with formula. To minimize any risk of the tube plugging, do not load the feeding or gavage tube with formula until immediately before tube feeding. Unlike other enteral feeding products, the EmerAid Intensive Care line replenishes the patient’s depleted energy, fat, and protein stores. Patient body weight falls midway between the guidelines listed above. Consequently, the recommended volume to feed falls between 293 ml and 346 ml per day. The median value is 320 ml and this number represents the maximum estimated volume to be fed daily. Feedings are cautiously planned for every 4 to 6 hours in this patient, so dividing 320 ml by 4 gives us approximately 80 ml per feeding. It is important to begin feedings cautiously, with 30% to 50% of this estimated volume for the first feeding: ~24 ml to 40 ml. First meal: Store Emeraid Carnivore in a cool, dry place. After opening, refrigerate the powder and use it within 9 months to maintain freshness and quality.
