Once you grab the net and pull it, you need to somehow get the handle in your hand. If you gab the net as low as possible which is at the top of the handle it’s not too bad to slide it down and grab it lower on the handle. For instance, if you have a small pond with a shallow depth, a pond net with shorter handle support and a narrower net may be more suitable. This will allow you more control over the cleaning process and make it much easier to guide your goldfish into the net itself. For larger or deeper ponds, a pond net with a long and sturdy handle and wider brim is more desirable, allowing you to reach further into the water and giving you an easier time with cleaning. If you just want to skim the water’s surface, a skimmer net would be best with an ultra-fine mesh and a shallow depth to the basket for maximum debris removal. Functionality: A well-designed net with a proper hoop sizer and shape is just easier to use and transport. Handle length is also important.

In the end, I have shown anglers multiple well-researched methods (Research = 37 years carrying nets up and down rivers + fishing with many experts) for hanging their nets and you and they can choose which one works best. The later video shows anglers using all three methods while the world champion hangs his net the same way I’ve been hanging mine for almost 10 years, however, all three methods work. Grip: The handle grip can be important especially when your hands are wet from rain or the river. Some net handles will be rubberized or have some sort of coating for better grip. The reason the competition anglers use a portable net like this is because of how easy they are at landing fish with one hand, and since they are so wide measure the fish in the net is easier, and they allow for easy hook removal and easy release. The elastic cord should be long enough that if you need to reach out a full arm’s length it will stretch that far. The elastic cord should be secured well so that it won’t come off unless you unclip it. On some net handles, you may need to drill a hole or tape the cord onto the handle. On some nets like the one in the above image, the net might even dangle in the river and will catch some floating debris. Look closely and you can see a branch caught on my client’s net. Due to the slightly wider basket opening, we recommend this net if you have larger pond fish you need to retrieve, but still want something for cleaning on the side. The mesh holes are of a medium size, and will allow for good water skimming and collection for all but the finest of debris. It would be great for skimming leaves from the surface, and also for raking string algae and sludge from the liner. Pond nets may not be complex like tools pumps or filters, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any factors to consider before purchasing!

Portability: Big bulky nets and nets with long handles are not good for river fishing. When trout fishing you DO NOT want a net you need to leave on the bank. Get a wading net designed to be portable. Don’t be that angler struggling to fit that once-in-a-lifetime giant trout in a tiny trout net and then losing it because he had the wrong net.Guide Tip: Keep a long elastic-type lanyard on the handle and attach it to your belt. Attach the hoop end to the magnetic release. Have you ever wondered about those wide hoop catch and release nets that the competition anglers use? Well, I’ve fished with world-class competition anglers and I actually use a competition net when I’m fishing for fun because a one-hand net these are the best catch and release net for small or big fish. This elastic safety cord also allows me to let go of my net while taking pictures or when releasing my fish and my net won’t float away down the river. The right way is how it is meant to be used, the best way often requires a modification, but it’s well worth the time to do it this way. Being rubber and not rope the elastic cord will prevent the net from ripping. Secure Your Fly Fishing Net Most anglers secure their nets with the handle up. This means the handle can be in the water at times.

The FishPond Net Holster and the Smith Creek Net Holter can be added to your wading belt to secure your net in an upright position. This is the reason why I find so many nets on the ground or hanging off low tree branches. This is also why your net mesh rips. When you hook a stump with that mesh as you are walking it can easily rip your net. The right-sized trout net will be small enough to be easily carried and will be light enough and capable of being attached to your body without weighing you down, but it will still be big enough to handle the largest trout in the river you are fishing. Weight: The weight of the net is important since it will likely be hanging off your shoulders or waist all day long. The only problem with these trout nets is that they are difficult to unfold with one hand when you have one hand on your rod fighting a big fish. Otherwise, they are a great mid-length net that can extend to a longer net if needed.

Another heavy duty all-round pond net which works great for both cleaning and fish retrieval is TotalPond’s telescoping net. Similar to the net from Tetra, but with a slightly wider basket opening and larger mesh holes. The net, at its widest point, is around 15-16″ in width and around 16″ in depth. The fabric is soft but very strong, so would be suitable for a wide range of debris and also for catching pond fish. If the waist cord is secured properly it will ensure me that if my magnet net release lets go while walking through the bush it will still be attached by my waist which will then pull me and notify me that it came off.

Choosing the Right Pond Net Pond nets are a great way to catch your fish or skim the water to clean debris. Public domain. The good thing with this method is it keeps the mesh away from trees and branches that can dislodge or damage the net. Size of the net: Consider the size and weight of the fish you could be catching and the weight and size of the net since you will likely be wade fishing. There are a variety of trout nets available from short-handle nets, long-handle nets, cheap nets, very expensive nets, and nets of all different shapes and sizes. I will discuss all of these so you know exactly which trout net is best for you.

Fishpond Shallow Fly Puck

I hope I explained how to carry a fly fishing net or any type of wading net better. If you have any questions or tips that you use let us know in the comments section below. Even though it can be used safely for fish, we prefer this net as a heavy-duty cleaning net. The material is strong and the mesh holes are fine enough for both small and large debris removal. The outer brim of the net basket also has a sturdy metal casing, making it a good choice for raking the pond liner of pond sludge. It is much more durable in comparison with a regular skimmer net, so would be useful if you suffer with heavy debris build-up or algae. The tiny mesh allows for all kinds of debris to be lifted up easily, and the material is soft enough not to damage fish if they manage to get caught. With that said, we do not recommend this type of net for catching pond fish, and it should just be used for skimming and cleaning purposes. The material is very fine and soft, and a struggling fish will easily break through with enough force.
