For eg all ours are marked up at 15' 1'' but are about 14'' 6''/14' 9'' depending on suspension settings.

Compare the measured height with the maximum height requirements for clearance in the area where the HGV vehicle will be traveling. I sometimes have to wind legs up slowly if a trailer is dropped so low I struggle to get under it even with air suspension all the way down. And sometimes need to lower a trailer if it's been dropped and is too high. Road vehicles are generally less than 4.5m tall however there are instances where vehicle height exceeds this, notably when a tipper is raised or when a load protrudes above the top line of the vehicle.

The RHA Newsletter

There are instances where an HGV might be subjected to an effective reduction of the height clearance, notably where a road slopes down towards a bridge or other overhead obstruction. The clearance for HGV height may also change with the raising or lowering of the mid-lift axle. Must admit I considered the approach of using trig from the comfort of the cab, but you'd have to be able to see the peak of the uneven load from two adjacent sides (peaks occurring toward the middle of the container and which only modestly exceed the height of the container, may not be visible on two adjacent sides at any reasonable distance), the peak would have to be occluded by the container at not-too-close an angle (i.e. if the peak is near to the edge of the container and clearly exceeds the height of the container even at close range, so that it is only occluded at an angle close to 90 degrees, then it would have to be measured directly to avoid an excessive margin of error), and you'd have to take all observations on a completely level area (because you have no tools capable of correcting for uneven ground), and the top of the container itself would still have to measured and would have to be completely level around its perimeter relative to the ground (or be measured at all the points where it coincides with the lines of observation).

Some people in the industry might possibly believe you have produced a good video for the LGV world, but from my stand-point it needs more detail. Something as thorough as the Fawcett/Long video would be more impressive. Conditions to be complied with in relation to the use of Vehicles Carrying Wide or Long Loads or Vehicles Carrying Loads or Having Fixed Appliances or Apparatus Which Project. 3.1 Part I (see regulations 81 and 82 1. Advance notice to police Since 1st October 1997 the law states that HGV height must be indicated inside the cab of a vehicle if the overall travelling height (OTH) of the vehicle or trailer exceeds three metres. This should be done using an HGV height indicator. A height indicator for an HGV must: f) every marker fitted in accordance with this paragraph shall be kept clean and unobscured and between sunset and sunrise be illuminated by a lamp which renders it readily visible from a reasonable distance and which is so shielded that its light, except as reflected from the marker, is not visible to other persons using the road.

This telescopic height pole folds down and fits neatly into a case complete with detailedinstructions on use. View the Instructions of Use (attached).

Due to the height of most road bridges a vehicle and its load should not exceed a height of 5.03m. This is the normal maximum clearance under highway bridges in the UK. i) an end marker, except in the case of a rearward projection which is fitted with a rear marking in accordance with the Lighting Regulations, and A driver should always know their HGV height (including load) and must remain vigilant about any changes to the height which can vary significantly depending on the load being carried. Vehicle height can change each time a vehicle is loaded, unloaded and reloaded. ii) a rearward projection exceeds 5 m extra side markers shall be fitted on either side of the projection so that the horizontal distance between the extreme projecting point of the vehicle from which the projection extends and the nearest point on any side marker from that point, and between the nearest points of any adjacent side markers on the same side does not exceed—The table below is a summary of the requirements applicable to front and rear overhanging loads set out in regulation 82(7) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 ( C&U), as amended. Length of projection ii) where required by subparagraphs (c) and (d) of this paragraph, 2 or more side markers; which shall be of the size, shape and colour described in Part II of this schedule. Areas that are vulnerable such as pipebridges, overhead gantries etc should be clearly identified and height restrictions clearly marked.
