About this deal

They were on the lookout for clean, crisp vodkas, with a smooth mouthfeel and well-integrated alcohol. There's no distillery tour or bar as such (unless you get very friendly with Ian), so ask for it in good bars or buy bottles online. City of London Distillery, Fleet Street Distillery Visit: Visit the Sacred Distillery in the heart of Highgate at the world’s first vacuum distillery. While you sip on a Sacred G&T, a member of the knowledgeable team will guide you through a short history of gin and explain the unique Sacred process, while you taste through 8 of their award-winning spirits. We start with a long fermentation before two distinct distillations. During the second of these, the vapours are elevated through a series of seven column stills to a height of 40 metres. As it ascends, our potato spirit passes over 2,000 purification plates, each raising the liquid a little bit closer to vodka perfection.

The beauty of vodka – unlike whisky or wine – is that, really, you can throw away the rulebook when it comes to glassware. Hell, drink it out of the bottle, if you like (though expect some concerned glances from guests.) An adjunct to the popular restaurant of the same name, this bar’s commitment to vodka extends to producing its own flavoured shots. Shots come in frozen glasses, while the more ambitious drinker is catered for with carafes of 4, 10 and 20 shots. With a vodka list of over 60 varieties including rye, grain, wheat and potato-based drinks, Baltic combines popular classics such as bison grass with more exotic flavourings such as sweet plum & chilli, and horseradish. Hayman’s Distillery Tours: Take this Distillery Tour for a behind the scenes look into how their award-winning family gin is made, distilled in the same way since 1863. The tour includes a welcome Hayman’s London Dry G&T and a fun and interactive talk through the gin botanicals with an opportunity to get a real feel for flavour and aromas. Plus a tutored tasting of three of award-winning gins with different mixers. A beautifully cooked tranche of roast cod sat on a bed of braised aubergine, courgette, tomatoes and capers. To be honest, this was a dish that spoke more to me of the South of France than Poland but as a light but satisfying main course on a cold day, it hit the spot.

Vodka can be made from almost anything. We’ve tested those made from potatoes, grains, grapes and even sugarcane. This is then fermented, before being distilled (often multiple times) to remove impurities — look out for this on the label. We carefully source every part of our product and our uncompromising approach is reflected in the way we produce the liquid. Our potato distillate originates from Germany; we blend and bottle our vodka in Lancashire, using local water. Our caps are manufactured in Italy, the bottles in France and our glass decoration comes from Scotland. Make Your Own Gin: Enjoy a G&T while learning about the history of gin and the Sacred Distillery. Then, taste through vacuum distilled botanicals and become a Master Blender and create your own recipe. One final drink and you’ll go home with a bottle of your bespoke gin blend and a 20cl bottle of Sacred Gin. We had a series of starters: Barszez was a rich, sweet beetroot consommé with a hint of horseradish bite and served with cream on the side. It came with a mushroom pasztecik, a light glazed pastry stuffed with a luxurious mushroom filling. The complex notes of the Kavka Tokaji vodka brought out the flavours in the barszez beautifully. Our panel – made up of 10-accredited spirits experts and vodka-loving consumers – put 20 vodkas to the test. Each was tried neat and blind, to avoid brand bias, then followed by some water to dilute and soften the alcohol and bring out the core flavours.
