Mayflash DolphinBar Dolphin Emulator - Hardware Review: Mayflash DolphinBar

I am wondering if anyone has got a standard wii sensor bar to work with a wiimote on retropie/retroarch This bundle contains an official GameCube Controller (White) as well as a very commonly used USB adapter to connect the controller to your PC. Your game should start up in full screen and your Wii remote should work as if you were sat in front of a real Wii console.

If you plug in the sensor bar to your Wii and keep your Wii turned on, you will be able to use the sensor bar for Dolphin. If you’re not familiar with the Nintendo Wii, it was the first console to use motion sensing on its controllers to allow the machine to sense the orientation of the handset. It also had an innovative infra red camera system so it could also see where you were pointing the handset and to give some basic 3D spatial measurements. Basically there was a sensor bar that you placed either above or below the TV screen. This had infra red LEDs at either end of it which the camera at the end of the Wii remote was able to see. Measuring the distance between the IR sources gave a measurement of depth, and the position and alignment of the dots in the camera’s field of view told the Wii where the remote was pointing and what rotation angle it was being held in. While the earlier Wii Remotes may seem easier to use, it must be noted that the -TR Wii Remotes have more lenient with Wii Remote audio timings and may result in slightly clearer Wii Remote audio under emulation. Here is described the easiest way to build a Wii sensor bar, it works for me with my dolphin emulator at 21 feets.

Just for practicality of USB in the any device with USB entry. Because, i play wiimote on the PS4, then the PS4 have USB... so i avoid the need of turning the Wii, even more than Wii is far from PS4. When you boot up Dolphin it won’t know about any of your games. First we need to tell it where the game files are stored. There are three major kinds of Wii Remotes. The original Wii Remote with no Motion Plus Inside, and two variants of the Wii Remote including Motion Plus. For Dolphin, connecting original Wii Remotes and the early Wii Remotes with Motion Plus inside is simpler, as you can just use the "1" and "2" buttons on the Wii Remote to connect to Dolphin. The later Wii Remotes with Motion Plus Inside (denoted by a -TR under the battery shell) changed the connection method and now you must use the red sync button under the battery shell to connect Wii Remotes to Dolphin. Supports four working modes:Keyboard and Mouse Mode (LED1), Keyboard and Mouse Game Mode(LED2), Game Controller Mode (LED3)and Wii Remote Controller Emulator Mode (LED4). Two options are listed here: either Wii Remote without Motion Plus Inside, or Wii Remote including Motion Plus. Normal Wii Remotes (without M+) are easier to setup with Dolphin, but they require you to buy and attach a Motion Plus add-on to your Wii Remote to play Motion Plus games. Wii Remote Plus do not require this add-on but are more complicated to setup with Dolphin.

The sensor bar maintained the classic silver color of the original Nintendo version, ensuring it blended seamlessly with our setup. Its 7.5-foot cable provided ample reach, giving us the flexibility to position it exactly where we needed. We tested it on both Wii and Wii U consoles, and it performed flawlessly, without any compatibility issues.

Update: Since the creation of this article, Bluetooth Passthrough has been created as a new option for Wii Remote connectivity. By taking over the drivers of a Bluetooth Adapter, it allows unprecedented support for Wii Remote features, including the speaker and even 3rd party Wiimotes. However it doesn't work on all bluetooth adapters, and requires some setup to work. Even though it may not be the best option anymore, the DolphinBar remains a very easy all-in-one option for Wii Remote functionality, and we still recommend it for users. The DolphinBar does not current work with Bluetooth Passthrough.

Once the circuit is complete, seal the connections with melted silicone, place the two sensors around 12" distance one to other. There has never been an ideal solution for sensor bars. The sensor bar on the Wii is just a set of IR lights, it should be easy! It's not. Third party sensor bars are usually battery powered, and that means they chew through batteries like crazy, have automatic shut offs, and generally aren't as bright as the original Wii sensor bar. There are some USB sensor bars on the market, but generally they are battery first, USB second, and STILL turn off automatically regardless of external power! And that's not even including sensor bars that can't even get the LEDs right. The situation with sensor bars has been so bad, just turning on a Wii and using its sensor bar is the preferred solution for many. The Mayflash DolphinBar is a sensor bar in itself, a USB powered one at that. And it actually performs very well when compared to the official Nintendo sensor bar. It's as bright as official sensor bars, with angled and grouped LEDs just like them, and it doesn't turn off while you are using it. As a sensor bar, the DolphinBar is... just a good sensor bar. It's a bit of a shame to have to say this, but in the third party sensor bar market we have today that's actually a big deal. What is the current rating? If you used batteries it should be 4x2.8 if the current rating is about right. That's right inbetween 7 and 8 AA batteries.
