Description

Like your putting stroke, a good chipping stroke will require your arms to stay relatively intact and quiet during the motion. Think about your arms and shoulders forming a triangle: Your goal is to keep that triangle intact while it moves throughout your motion. Alex Hay was a great influence during my first few years at Woburn. In sport more generally Sir Clive Woodward has taught me how to deliver at the highest level. If you are a good chipper, and you miss the green, you have the confidence to make up for a missed shot.

Our 10th and final short game drill is a high volume rep drill to build your putting skills from 6 feet and in since this is a critical distance you’ll face often. In this video , Top 100 teacher Eric Johnson provides an example of the rule. He counts the paces from his ball to his target landing zone and onto the cup. He calculates 4 paces for flight and 12-paces for roll. For most golfers, improving your chipping is one of the simplest ways to lower your score and build your confidence. First, you need to understand what a chip shot is: It’s a short-game stroke in which the ball carries into the air and then rolls an equal distance (or a slightly longer distance) than it carries. It has a lower ball flight and travels a shorter distance than a chip shot, which means it’s lower-maintenance and more forgiving. When you have left yourself a few yards from the green, you probably want to chip the ball towards the hole. The chip is a short stroke designed to bounce and gently roll toward the hole. By the way, we call this this 6-8-10 Formula because the formula involves the 6-iron, 8-iron and pitching wedge, and the pitching can technically be called a 10-iron.)Hit some chip shots with that club and again aim to see the ball landing at the marker before rolling on the short rest of the way. The scoring is simple: 1 point inside of the outer ring, 2 points, 3 points, and 4 points as you finish within the inner rings. Holing out or finishing on the target is worth 5 points. Follow the chipping drills below to get your chip shots into gimme range and save more pars during your golf round. Sometimes the right chip shot isn’t always to get the ball airborne for as long as possible so that it lands as close to the pin as possible.

Chip 2 balls to each of the three flags, the first two towards the first flag, the following two at the next, and so on. It won’t come out with spin, and won’t work in all scenarios, but in many instances it’s a great way of almost guaranteeing the strike to reduce the risk of a duffed chip. You need to get down, read the green, and aim your shot accordingly. The perfect chip will be useless if the green works against the direction you send the ball.

Final Thoughts

Place some upside down cones in between the participant and the target. Teams get minus points if any ball land or touches the hazard. Since our goal in chipping is to roll the ball along the ground as much as possible, it is important to understand the air-time/ground-time ratios of chip shots hit with different clubs. The selection of the correct club is vital. You can chip with anything from a 3-iron to a sand wedge depending on the situation, but you must know the following formulas (also illustrated in the accompanying chart) to decide which club is required: Once done with all three balls, drop your wedge and instead grab your putter and walk up to your balls.

The problems associated with hinging and releasing your wrists as you come towards impact is that you need to get the timing absolutely right or else the ball will shoot across the putting surface or your club will strike the ground first. With this chipping drill you will train yourself to really aim for your chip shots to come to rest really close to the hole. So close that converting your par through a one-putt becomes a formality. Take three balls with you and drop them in the rough just off the practice putting green so that they have a similar lie and distance from the hole. A chipping iron is not included in this set so you’ll need to use your own wedges and clubs when practicing. A sand wedge or lob wedge is recommended. Other Specs to Know:

Golf Practice Plans

Try to one-putt each ball and take note of how many “up-and-down” equivalents you are able to make. Practical Golf is an honest resource for the everyday golfer who is looking to enjoy the game more, and find ways to improve -

Exciting & enjoyable golf game for all the family, suitable for adults & children of all ages. Includes target mat, designated chipping area, & 20 hook & loop strapped balls. Measuring 152cm x 75cm. This game can be conveniently rolled up & transported for use both indoors & outdoors. Use your pitching wedge to hit some chip shots with the aim of seeing the ball land at the midway target. Some golfers prefer the standard grip, some use their putting grip, and others use a unique grip for chipping. It is about what works best for you and delivers the best results.Depending on the lie conditions and many other factors the best course of action oftentimes is to see the ball make just the hop necessary to clear the rough so that it lands on the putting green and starts rolling from there.
