Legally barred from the name "Robot Wars", American robot combat aficionados created a new company, BattleBots, under the ownership of Greg Munson and Trey Roski. The first official BattleBots event was hosted in Long Beach in August 1999, while a second event in Las Vegas was used to pitch the competition to television networks. For five seasons, BattleBots aired on the American Comedy Central and was hosted by Bil Dwyer, Sean Salisbury, and Tim Green. Comedy Central's first season premiered on August 23, 2000, and its fifth and last season ended on December 21, 2002. While small untelevised competitions continued to be run under the BattleBots name, the show was on hiatus until it was revived on ABC in 2015. Ramrods: Sharpened steel spikes that rise up out of the arena floor in groups of six, serving either to lift a robot off the ground or damage vulnerable portions of the undercarriage. Omitted for the ABC/Discovery/Science Channel-shown seasons. This set includes the formidable past champion, Tombstone, adding an extra layer of intensity to your battles. Can you outwit and overcome this legendary contender? Walking" robots (stompbots) propelled by means other than wheels were initially given a 50% weight bonus. The rules changed following the victory of a heavyweight stompbot (Son of Whyachi) at BattleBots 3.0. For BattleBots 4.0 and beyond only a 20% weight bonus was given to walkers and the technical rules specified that walking mechanisms do not use cam operated walking mechanisms as they were functionally too similar to wheel operation. Since the rules change, walking robots have entered the competition, but none has achieved any success beyond preliminary rounds. As of 2020, true walkers are given a 100% weight bonus, allowing the only competing walker, Chomp, to weigh 500 pounds. [18] Matches [ edit ] A smaller version of the BattleBox used for BattleBots IQ events was loaned to USATL for their 2014 STEM Olympiad event, held in Miami, Florida.

Really disappointed at how the rules effected the outcome of this fight. Captain Shrederator - Battlebots had clearly won the match until they were forced to engage with the crabwalking Emulsifier.BattleBots: Champions is a six-episode series involving 48 bots in total. In each of the first five episodes, eight bots fight through a single-elimination tournament, called the "Sin City Slugfest". Each winner of the Sin City Slugfest then battles a winner of a BattleBots: Bounty Hunters bounty match. The victor progresses to the Golden Bolt tournament. The sixth episode is the Golden Bolt tournament, where the five surviving bots face off against each other and three current or former BattleBots champions (Tombstone, End Game, and Tantrum). The overall winner of BattleBots: Champions is awarded the Golden Bolt. At the end of the tournament, a series of 'rumbles' or 'melee rounds' is typically held in each weight class, allowing robots that survived the main tournament to fight in a 'free for all' in a 5-minute match. Occasionally, there are too many robots for one rumble, and multiple rumbles are held with the top surviving bots competing in a final event. Spike Strips: The lower walls of the arena are lined with inward-pointing 6-inch long sharpened steel spikes. Pushing an opponent hard into a wall may lodge it in the spikes, immobilizing it. Bales explains that at his day job, they have times where they go through two or three generations of a part or assembly design in a single day. “Putting ourselves under the gun and doing things right up until the last minute where things have to work the first time, and in front of an audience on BattleBots, has really helped me in my day job. A live audience and big company CEOs are different, but they both like it when things work the first time.”

[17] Updates to the hazards were also evident in the Pulverizers, which retired their classic mallet-shaped heads for a newer, denser design with a rhomboid shape. Lights at the bottom that previously only signalled the activation of Killsaws now also follow the sequence for starting a match. A further change was the apparent removal of the panel-based hellraisers from the center of the arena. In their place, an additional set of upward-firing spikes were added to the same area identified by the updated BattleBots logo, rising from small unmarked holes. [29] The 2015 edition was hosted by Molly McGrath, with Chris Rose and former UFC fighting legend Kenny Florian as commentators. The battle arena announcer was Faruq Tauheed, and Alison Haislip conducted interviews on the sidelines and behind the scenes. The judges were engineer and NASA astronaut Leland Melvin, Nerdist News anchor Jessica Chobot and visual effects artist, and former competitor, Fon Davis. A 'scaled-down' version of the BattleBox was created for the invitation-only 2006 Cisco Party private event in Las Vegas, accommodating specially-invited middleweight robots. This differed in having a rectangular base (16' x 24') and only two Pulverizers located in the arena corners, each operated by team members. The positioning of the red and blue squares was also swapped, with the blue square being placed to the left of the BattleBots logo. [20] [21] On October 5, 2023, a second season of BattleBots: Champions, titled BattleBots II: Sin City aired on Discovery Channel and streamed on MAX. It was filmed concurrently with the 2023 BattleBots World Championship VII (season 12). [22] Competitors and results [ edit ] Comedy Central [ edit ] Comedy Central seasons Sparks will fly. Spinning discs in the BattleBox floor designed to disrupt robots which drove over them. Not designed to cause damage, they were introduced in Season 2.0 and scrapped after Season 5.0. Contemporary BattleBots robots have to fit inside an 8’ x 8’ square and weigh less than 250 lbs. While an array of other rules exist to keep the battles fair, the 250 lb death machines can be pretty liberal with destruction.
