But what makes these better than most colored pencils is that the eraser on the top will help to prevent any frustration should mistakes occur (a common problem kids have with markers and crayons). Bottom Line I do like working in graphite, but I do prefer color. Now, I know I will enjoy sketching in my sketchbook so much more by using color. The color palette is very basic, which is what you would expect from a set containing only 24 colors, so the next big question would be how they perform? Perhaps their performance can help one over look the small palette, allowing for a reasonable blending experience, bearing in mind however that we are dealing with colored pencils here and not watercolor, there is only so much you can do with regards to blending. Col-Erase Performance

Prismacolor Col-Erase Erasable Colored Pencil, 1 Set of 24

The Col-Erase Pencils are known for their blendability. Colors can be easily blended together to create smooth gradients and transitions. My conclusion is that I was not thinking about the Col-Erase Colored Pencils in the right way, initially. It is important to note that sharpening may lead to occasional breakage, especially if the pencils are sharpened too aggressively or inconsistently. They may require more effort and pressure to fully erase the color, and some residue may be left behind on the paper. On the other hand, the Scholar pencils have a slimmer barrel, making them suitable for users with smaller hands or those who prefer a more delicate grip. The lighter weight of the Scholar pencils also allows for easy maneuverability and precise control. The rounded barrel shape of the Scholar pencils provides a comfortable grip, reducing strain on the hand and fingers. These are pencils that not only can put down incredibly bright and vivid strokes on a piece of paper, but unlike some of the top-rated colored pencils we recently reviewed, these colored pencils will also be able to lift from the paper as well – like the Tombo Irojiten’s. The points of these pencils retain their sharpness for a decent amount of time, providing consistent and precise lines. One thing I noticed almost immediately is how cleanly they lay down. No crumbs! Also, they do not smudge! Yes! They do erase but erase best on light applications. Trying to erase a heavier application will lift it, but it will not erase completely. (The same can be said for graphite as well, though.) While they may occasionally break when subjected to excessive force or pressure, they generally hold up well during regular coloring and sketching.

Next, I tested them on a sheet of Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper, which has a very smooth surface. Some artists and kids have mentioned that it does take just a little bit of force to really bring out the bold colors. However, with regular pressure, you should have no problem seeing the marks (especially if you are using these in a journal). You have to work a little harder at it if you layer. You have to lay down about 4 layers to get the colors to blend, where the non-erasable premier blends with just two layers.

Prismacolor Col-Erase - Erasable Colored Pencils - Colerase

However, the Col-Erase are being sold as colored pencils that can be erased and on the bases that they have their own eraser attached to each individual pencil, you would be forgiven for thinking that as I have mentioned, the eraser was specially formulated to lift the pigment, or the pigment had a resin specific to the pencil allowing the attached eraser to lift the pigment better, but this was not what I discovered. Conclusion Prismacolor has received notable accolades and awards over the years, further solidifying its reputation for quality. However, specific information about accolades received by the brand for these particular products is not provided. The overall quality and reputation of the brand, however, are established through its long history of delivering exceptional art supplies. It would be nicer, since they have the prismacolor name, if they came in a metal tin at least. Additional Cons The Col-Erase Pencils excel in producing vibrant and rich colors. The pigments are bold, allowing for a visually stunning final result. I also read; they are not for coloring. Well, I would agree with that because of the blending/mixing issue. Pros The Scholar line of colored pencils is known for its smooth and creamy color laydown, allowing for easy blending and shading. Both artists use a blue pencil for lightly sketching the initial line drawing before inking (in Barry’s case) or using colored pencils (in Moore’s case). Their reasons are similar: While not invisible to modern cameras, non-photo blue lines are so subtle and pale that they tend to magically blend and disappear once the final medium is applied. In addition, lightly applied pale blue pencil is easily erased. Moore demonstrated another practical reason: If an initial drawing is made with graphite, almost all of it must be carefully erased before applying colored pencil. If any large particles of graphite remain, they could smudge, muddying the colors.

The Scholar Pencils also blend well. The creamy leads allow for smooth and seamless color blending, making it effortless to achieve various effects. But one aspect that many artists and animators loved about this pencil was the ability for the eraser to remove any pigment off the surface. Given that the lead is hard and strong, it lays down very smoothly and really gets into the “tooth” of the paper. It is not quite as soft as the premier pencils, but still feels creamy when you work with them. These colored pencils are specifically designed with erasable leads, making them perfect for adult coloring projects that require precision and control. I think this brand has been far to criticized and to let you all know, Yes, they came unsharpened. I was glad they came this way. I know what sharpener to use & how to use it right & that makes all the difference! The leads are designed to withstand pressure and resist breaking, making them ideal for heavy-handed users or those who apply significant pressure while coloring or sketching. So, if you’re used to sketching in graphite, you will welcome this advantage – it won’t get all over you or your paper!
