Description

Daughters of Castle Deverill by Santa Montefiore | Waterstones

When I read The Girl in the Castle I didn't know it was book one in a trilogy. That story ended well and didn't leave you hanging. Maybe one little mystery at the end but otherwise, it could have been a stand alone novel. It was quite a treat to find two more books were planned as I very much enjoyed the characters and plot. Why would I want to listen to a book when I love to read? I was pleasantly surprised. I just loved to hear the voices of this epic tale.It was a delight to hear this story with Irish accents.

So many story lines weaving together, leaving the reader with great anticipation about what happens next. The main characters are all about to collide and I expect many fireworks in book three. My particularly favourite character is Kitty. Strong, determined and willful she is in the center of all the exploits. Reading this novel I became in tune with Kitty and her feelings, following a young girl growing up and doing what is right for the greater good rather than for what one wants. This became heartbreaking at times but as the novel comes full circle you understand why the decisions she makes are detrimental to those around her. Somewhere in this is a life lesson. I came into The Daughters of Castle Deverill, the second book in a series written by established British author Santa Montefiore, having just read its predecessor, Songs of Love and War. Although it is not essential to have read the first book, Songs of Love and War, to enjoy The Daughters of Castle Deverill, I believe it enhanced my reading experience. It gave me a good handle on the characters and the scene that had been set. However, Montefiore does devote time in the Daughters of Castle Deverill in keeping her readers up to speed on her characters and their lives, which enables the book to also be read as a standalone novel.

Daughters of Castle Deverill By Santa Montefiore |The Works

Meet Me Under the Ombu Tree is the unforgettable, evocative, and moving tale of forgiveness and love. It follows the lives of the Solanas family living in the tumultuous years of political turmoil in Argentina. Sofia Solanas is the lead character, a proud, resourceful, wilful, spoilt daughter of Argentine nobility. She lives on an expansive ranch and has been brought up under the spiritual practices of the gauchos, and the time-honored traditions of her highborn parents. Everybody seems to love Sofia except for Anna, her Irish mother who visits her sense of inadequacy and alienation on her daughter. When Sofia gets into a steamy love affair that her mother believes would disgrace the family if it ever came out, she banishes Sofia to Europe. By sending her away, she inadvertently exiles the daughter not only from her soul mate for over a decade but also from her family. Food and drinks are mentioned here and there. I wanted to represent both social economic divisions so I brought a Pomegranate Martini which would appeal to the Deverill family and Scones with cream and jam for the Doyle and O'Leary families. Santa Montefiore born Santa Palmer-Tomkinson is a British-Argentine writer best known for writing romantic thriller novels. She had always wanted to write professionally ever since she was a child and would graduate from reading children short stories to naïve love stories as she aged. At age twelve, she attended the Sherborne School for Girls where she was terrible at practically everything except for English, in which she was always the best in the class. She would frequently write up stories pairing up her friends with the boys they fancied from the Sherborne Boy’s School just across the fence. Her friends loved the stories, and fancying herself one of the greatest novelists that ever lived, she submitted them to a publisher only to be rejected. When she turned 19, her mother organized a teaching job for her on an Argentine Pampa, where she was to be tutor to three young children. The time that she spent in Argentine turned out to be some of the best things that her parents ever did for her. She fell in love with the country and made it her second home, even setting several of her novels there. This novel has everything love, loss secrets and even ghosts of the past, it is the wonderful conclusion to the Deverill Chronicles. Sometimes second books can stand alone–this one, however, cannot. And there is no indication on the cover that this is part of a trilogy, so I have a feeling a lot of readers are going to end up confused like I was. Once I got into the book and kind of figured out what was going on, it was fine. The story started moving, and the pieces started making sense together–I still felt like I was playing catch up the whole time, though. Nobody does epic romance like Santa Montefiore. Everything she writes, she writes from the heart' -- Jojo Moyes It is 1925 and Castle Deverill has burned to the ground. War and deception have divided the daughters of Ireland, but Celia vows to return her ancestral home to its former glory. Kitty raises a young family but longs for something more, and Bridie flourishes as a New York socialite consumed by revenge. Celia works to reunite her childhood friends and restore the place they once called home, but soon everything she knows is cast into doubt as the Great Depression looms.
