We wish all those people receiving these meals and gifts a safe and happy Christmas and that this can be the start of a closer link between them and their clubs.” In another powerful demonstration of the positive impact football can make in local communities, 487 socially isolated older people have been invited to their local SPFL stadiums to enjoy a free Christmas meal, receive a gift and meet new friends including staff from the clubs. Our partners at the Salvation Army will once again make our festive dinner and we will deliver this along with a gift and special hamper, provided by the SPFL Trust, to each and everyone on our list. Festive Friends At Home, is about more than just sending out Christmas hampers; it’s about delivering compassion, patience and kindness at the end of a year when it’s never meant more.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) will also be assisting ATCs with deliveries throughout the festive period. In each SFRS delivered hamper, there will be fire safety advice leaflets for the elderly and vulnerable.

Festive Friends is a very simple but hugely effective project which will allow clubs to make a real difference and provide a memorable day for hundreds of socially isolated elderly people across Scotland. Not only is it more important than ever that we show compassion and kindness and reach out to those people who are isolated during the festive season, as a Service we also know that the risk of fire in homes can greatly increase at this time of year – particularly for those living alone. Enjoying chocolate as part of a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, is one of life's little pleasures. We are pleased to today (Tuesday 09 February) launch our report which reveals the biggest ever Festive Friends campaign.Due to Covid-19 it wasn’t possible to host Christmas lunches so we teamed up with 37 ATCs to launch a new ‘at home’ version of the programme in 2020. SPFL Trust interim chief executive Warren Hawke comments: “We’re pleased to see the wide-spread support and compassion of community trusts and the associated SPFL clubs. It’s incredible to see how Scottish football has stepped up to help such a large number of those in need. The scale of the project meant that volunteers were crucial to help with the volume of deliveries. A magnificent 558 people pitched in across the country to help.

It's been a tough year for everyone due to Covid-19, but of course it has been especially difficult for the elderly who are at higher risk of social isolation. SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster said: “With all 42 SPFL clubs currently delivering community activities out with matchdays, there has never been so much effort from them to help the people local to them and who need that support. That’s why every hamper delivered by SFRS will include essential fire safety advice and guidance, and our staff are more than happy to speak to people for more advice or just for a socially distanced door-step chat. We’d like to thank James Anderson and our second donor for their support in delivering this initiative. Their generosity will enable us to reach more people than ever before.”
