About this deal

So it's appropriate that Oxford is publishing this collection at this time of year. There is an enormous pleasure to be had reading James's ghost stories, and even if you do not have a decanter and a log fire, you can readily imagine that you do, as his stories are more, perhaps, about atmosphere than about actual horror (for that, I recommend the stories of his contemporary and, I'm fairly sure, friend, EF Benson). Smith, Clark Ashton (February 1934). "The Weird Works of M. R. James", The Fantasy Fan. Reprinted in Smith, Planets and Dimensions. Baltimore: Mirage Press, 1973.

Count Magnus and Other Ghost Stories. 2005. Edited, with an introduction and notes, by S. T. Joshi.Sir John Betjeman, in an introduction to Peter Haining's book about James, shows how influenced he was by James's work: There Was a Man Dwelt by a Churchyard", in Snapdragon (Eton ephemeral magazine), 6 December 1924, pp.4–5 A Descriptive Catalogue of the Manuscripts in the Library of Gonville and Caius College. Volume 1; Volume 2. Cambridge University Press, 1907. Reissued by the publisher, 2009; ISBN 978-1-108-00248-6 An eccentric professor finds a whistle carved from bone in a graveyard while on holiday in Norfolk. After blowing the whistle, he is troubled by terrible visions. [57]

Far from seeing this as an example of initiative, senior officials at Windsor Castle and his headmaster at Eton viewed it as an impertinent act and he was verbally chastised for it. However, James proved the doubters wrong by later becoming Assistant Director and subsequently Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. He held this post at the same time as that of Provost at King’s College. His academic work, particularly on the Apocrypha, is still referenced today. Eton and King's, Recollections Mostly Trivial, 1875–1925, Cambridge University Press, 1925. ISBN 978-1-108-03053-3. Buen relato, envolvente, que sugiere hasta dar con el espectro y su explicación, detallando perfectamente las incertidumbres y temores del protagonista. Al final deja un notable mensaje ‘Apocalíptico’. Leaving his ill and ageing wife in a care home, a retired astronomer revisits one of their old coastal haunts, but after discovering a ring on the beach is soon haunted himself. [36]

David Punter, The Literature of Terror: A History of Gothic Fictions from 1765 to the Present Day, Vol. II, Modern Gothic, p. 86. The Collected Ghost Stories of M. R. James. 1931. Contains the 26 stories from the original four books, plus "After Dark in the Playing Fields" (1924), "There Was a Man Dwelt by a Churchyard" (1924), "Wailing Well" (1928), and "Rats" (1929). It does not include three stories completed between 1931 and James's death in 1936. An interesting read which requires some concentration not to lose the plot, good reading for the lover of older supernatural fiction.
