About this deal

Shot with Kodak Portra 120. Outdoors during daylightKodak Portra likes daylight: so that means always ensuring it’s around. If you’re shooting with it at night or around Tungsten/Incandescent lighting you’re going to get very orange tones to the scenes you photograph. If you’re shooting in cloudy situations, I also highly recommend using a flash unless your lab is very good at fixing colors.

If you have a camera or photography shop near you that keeps a good selection of film, they should really have some Portra 400. The only reason they wouldn’t is that they’ve sold out. It comes in a 5-roll box but any shop worth their salt should let you buy single rolls from open boxes too. At the same time Vericolor VPL was replaced by that Ektacolor tungsten film, Vericolor VPS was also being killed off to make way for the new Portra NC – or natural colour – films, which were available in 160 and 400 speeds. EDUCATION: Chris graduated Magna Cum Laude from Adelphi University with a degree in Communications in Journalism in 2009. Since then, he's learned and adapted to various things in the fields of social media, SEO, app development, e-commerce development, HTML, etc. Fear not, though. If you can’t find any in person, don’t have time to go and look, want to find it at the best price before buying, or indeed want to buy less than 5 rolls, there are plenty of people online who will sell you some instead. Kodak Portra 400 is a film bound to not disappoint you–especially if you can know and understand what you’re going to be getting beforehand. To do that, I really recommend shooting with your digital camera at ISO 400 and with daylight white balance. Here’s a video we did with tips on how to make the most of it.I’m impressed by the high latitude of Portra 400, and think it really deserves it’s reputation as one of the best all-round films available to date. As long as exposure is close and light is used appropriately images will come through as the photographer intended. If I wanted to give one of my point ‘n’ shoot cameras to a friend who doesn’t shoot film to try and see how they liked it, Portra would also be a likely choice. I think it’d give them results that’d make them want to shoot more film. The Kodak Portra film is a daylight-balanced film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 400. This enables you to capture a range of photographs including the shots where the lighting situation cannot be controlled. Designed especially for portraiture, travel, nature, wedding, and outdoor shoots (including moving subjects), this film is a versatile accessory. It is suitable for all the film roll cameras with a 35 mm format. What's in the box? Notice how you’re still getting muted tones here but they could be better if there was just more light? I probably should have overexposed it but for this session. I was using a Mamiya RB67 Pro S.

Finally for this section, there’s a Portra 400 datasheet right here that gives you more information than I care to parrot, although I will relay some impressive-sounding highlights. Pro Tip: the latest emulsions of Kodak Portra were designed to be scanned. We recommend Portra 400 more than almost anything else out there.Kodak Portra in larger formats tends to look a million times better than the 35mm format, though I should admit that the 35mm format can also hold its own very well. The film was designed to be scanned and so all you really need to focus on is getting the exposure absolutely perfect in camera. It’s Vericolor II that brings us to the Portra era, with the VPL one first being replaced by a short-lived Ektacolor Pro Gold 100T film in 1998. A year later, this was rebranded as Portra 100T, a film that was discontinued in 2006.

All that said though, does it really matter? It’s a point worth mentioning because it’s a real phenomenon and I couldn’t write this review without bringing it up. It’s not something worth preaching about though. You can shoot what you want. Whether Portra is in your local 1-hour photo place or pharmacy is less certain. The last time I went in mine, the only Kodak films they had were the consumer ones like Gold 200. Portra 400’s high price and those 5-roll boxes likely have something to do with this. Whether it’s a price worth paying is up to you. If you haven’t shot it before, I’d recommend you try it at least once. I could see myself using multiple rolls for a project too, to take advantage of its quality. It’s the same attributes that make it good for both groups; the flexibility, the reliability, and the consistency it brings with its image quality and qualities. Choose Kodak Portra Films for natural skin tones, ideal colour, and finer grain in every situation. Day or night, studio or location, candid or posed, KODAK PROFESSIONAL PORTRA Films deliver-

For years, professional photographers have preferred KODAK PROFESSIONAL PORTRA Films because of their consistently smooth, natural reproduction of the full range of skin tones. In that same tradition, the new PORTRA 400 Film is the ideal choice for portrait and fashion photography, as well as for nature, travel and outdoor photography, where the action is fast or the lighting can?t be controlled. Exposing this film at ISO 200 and developing for 320. This way it gets more light but not an excessive amount. The same streamlining happened with the ISO 160 Portra a year later, while the ISO 800 Portra was only ever available in a single version anyway. Kodak Portra 400 is a pretty new film; especially when you consider how long Kodak as a brand has been around. It was born in 1998 and changed to what it is today in 2010. But no matter what, you should know that Kodak Portra 400 is also so popular because it is one of the most forgiving films on the market. Tech SpecsIndoors with a flashNow this set was done with a Canon 580 EX II attached to a Canon 1V and using Zeiss and Sigma lenses. Sigma’s older 85mm f1.4 (non-art) did a great job here when blending the ambient light and the daylight output of the flash being bounced off of a ceiling.
