About this deal

Susanna Epp's DISCRETE MATHEMATICS, THIRD EDITION provides a clear introduction to discrete mathematics. The Student’s Solutions Manual contains additional helpful tips for studying mathematics, and preparing for and taking an examination in mathematics. Actually pretty interesting (actually enjoyed taking notes for it, for once), even if a lot of it we didn't actually need in class. The best thing about this book is the clear tone of enthusiasm for the subject that comes through loud and clear. The text contains in-depth coverage of all major topics proposed by professional associations for a discrete mathematics course.

Would recommend as a relatively breezy introduction to proof-writing and select topics (logic, graph theory, etc. The tone is infectious and I found myself as I read the book feeling as if I were in a lecture hall attentively listening to the author, Oscar Levin. The text starts with a brief but useful introduction to mathematical concepts (mathematical statements, sets and functions), and then goes on to cover a range of topics in depth, broken up into four main sections: Combinatorics, Sequences, Symbolic Logic and Proofs, and Graph Theory, as well an Additional Topics section that touches on Generating Functions and provides an introduction to Number Theory. I didn’t encounter obvious mistakes or omissions in my first reading of the text, and only a few typos (e. The topics covered in this book have book have been in existence for a long time and I cannot imagine them to become isolate ever.

as well as a number of textbooks, all characterized by clarity, logical presentation, and meticulous detail. This subject is essentially timeless because the principles are mathematical and will always be true and valid.

DISCRETE MATHEMATICS WITH APPLICATIONS, 5th Edition, Metric Edition explains complex, abstract concepts with clarity and precision and provides a strong foundation for computer science and upper-level mathematics courses of the computer age. While I'm still not sure I understand anything from this class, this textbook did kind of save my life. In the case of computational geometry, the algorithms will be applied to solve geometrical problems.

This book has its share of those mistakes (for instance when the author proves a formula for the exact value of the floor or ceiling of n/2, or when she proves that the square of an odd number is odd and the square of an even number is even), but the chapter on number theory has some interesting examples as well. Since then it has been used as the primary text for this course at UNC, as well as at other institutions. Logical formulas are described by the discrete structure, which is used to create directed acyclic graph structures and finite trees. The online interactive format is particularly engaging and likely, in my opinion, to be found useful by students.

It also didn't help that almost every topic was explained via unintuitive set theory notation, when I'm guessing there are more colloquial ways to teach each unit. The primary focus of this text is not to provide a rigorous mathematical foundation for Computer Science students; instead, it is targeted towards first and second year undergraduate math majors who will go on to teach middle school and high school mathematics. Section that uses the Stanley cup tournament rules to make students think about how many ways a team can win, and how to generalize the problem space. The book’s design and interface is well-thought out, particularly the interactive online version, which is cleanly designed, non-distracting, functional and approachable, with simple and straight-forward navigational controls. The sections introducing mathematical induction were reorganized, discussion of structural induction was expanded, and additional applications of induction were provided. If we accept the proposition that a book on discrete math needs be inclusive of a variety of races, ethnicities, and backgrounds, the book may fall short on that count. Unifying interdisciplinary applications, problems, and approaches of discrete mathematics, this book connects topics in graph theory, combinatorics, number theory, cryptography, dynamical systems, finance, optimization, and game theory.

C., the king of Macedonia invited him to supervise the education of his young son, Alexander, who later became Alexander the Great. I found this text to be well written and structured, and will be considering using it as the text for a Discrete Mathematics course that I teach. The finite set is restricted with two values that are false and true, but in fuzzy logic, logic will also have continuous values.A large number of computer science applications are included, both to motivate students and to ease their transition into more advanced computer science courses. Boolean Algebra and Combinatorial Circuits; Appendix; Bibliography; Solutions to Odd Numbered Exercises; Index. It appears to have a comprehensive index and it also has a "list of symbols" which I would imagine would be very helpful.
