It looks like play but the success of each design relies upon the precise measurements of the basic simple garment being manipulated. There is a section in the first two books, that illustrates how the stylelines work: how you can replace the darts with any kind of cut, as long as it passes through the dart-points.

There are others, too, but what I love about these in particular, is that instead of just giving you the finished pattern to copy, the book explains how to draft it yourself! Having made a few of these designs, my advice would be toalways label your pattern pieces, use more notches than you've ever used before and numberthe corresponding notches. One of the best bits about the books is that Japanese born Tomoko Nakamichi has created these sculptural designs so they can beincorporated into other designs/outfits.
