Incidentally, I learned that Fabriano Artistico hot press paper works very well with the cyanotype process and makes a very nice print. After doing a few experiments and some googling it turned out the paper needed to be exposed for at least a few hours. The new molecule is colorless so that as the blue molecules are converted, the white of the paper base begins to show through. Use old photo negatives, x-rays, bits of lace, leaves, printed transparencies or even household objects to compose designs. Just as the Sun’s light stimulated a chemical change in the previous step, the water stimulates another chemical change in this one.

Cyanotype allowed Atkins to document ferns and other plant life by creating what is known as photograms. Cyanotype is a very easy photographic process and can be used for much more than just reproducing photographs. The superior quality and weight of Sunography paper produces finely detailed prints that are suitable for tinting or hand colouring with any media.This was a very open brief which meant you could do whatever you wanted so long as it had something to do with modernism. If you use sunography paper, all the prints are meant to come out in a rich blue colour but using these we found more variety of colour. Areas of the paper covered by your objects still contain the original blue molecule, so they remain blue.

As it turned out my final project of semester 2 was also heavily inspired by cyanotypes and technical drawings. SolarFast dyes from Jacquard develop their colour and become permanent upon exposure to sunlight, and use a different technology.
